For Nick Kyrigios, he finished this week to be his most memorable one yet as he defeated the world no. 3 Alexander Zverev by 6-3 and 6-4 in the final of the Mexico Open held in Acapulco.
Kyrgios is renowned to be a player that has a powerful serve along with spectacular forehand and when both of these are combined he is unplayable. This was what happened this week in Mexico as he not only competed with his best performance yet but also won the fifth ATP tour title of his career.
Kyrgios, who not only offered immense praise to his opponent following the criticism he suffered at the hands of Rafael Nadal, said, “ it is an amazing feeling as I did not expect it all day. I was aware that I was coming to this match as the underdog and he is known to be a world top class player. He definitely is a talented tennis player with not many weaknesses. This is why I started playing my kind of tennis and I am immensely happy with my performance. Initially, I was really down and out as I did not know about my place as to what will I do. However, after a week like this many things can change for good.”
In order to make it to this final match on Saturday against Zverev, Kyrgios had to earlier defeat Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka. On his way to the final, Kyrgios also not drop even one of the set this week.
Kyrgios started in this tournament with being world rank no. 72 but with this win, he is now going to be world rank no. 32 as he climbs up 32 ranks.
As for the women’s tournament of Mexico Open, Wang Yafan gained a victory over Sofia Kenin as she claimed her first title of the career with a win by 2-6, 6-3 and 7-5.
