More than 100 protestors protest against Tokyo hosting the 2020 Olympics

A little over 100 people gathered in Tokyo city in order to protest the city’s position for holding the Olympics Games which are due to start in Japan exactly after 1 year.

The protest was started earlier on Tuesday and the leaders of the protest said to a news conference that the Olympics Games are damage to the environment and they also argued that the money which is spent on these Games is to be used somewhere else.

Participants of these protests were from cities like Los Angeles and Paris which are the cities that will host the Olympic Games in 2028 and 2024 respectively.

A Parisian politician named Danielle Simonnet who was at the protest said, “It is important for us who are in opposition of the 2024 Olympics games, to be coming here at the international meeting to be protesting against the Olympics Games. We also want to show our solidarity with the Japanese who are also against these 2020 games along with our friends from Los Angeles who are against the 2028 Games.”

The latest budget figure for Japan’s Olympics games that was released back in December of 2019 places the total costs of the games at 12.6 billion dollars which is way over the original estimate that was well below 7 billion dollars.

The Japanese government has faced serious criticism for hosting the Olympics games especially despite the country being devastated by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

Jules Boykoff, the former academic, and an athlete said, “to return to Tokyo and to see that all the money is being plunged for the Olympics despite cities like Fukushima still suffering, it was all mind-blowing for me.”

Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo defended the cost of the Olympics hosting by saying that the Paralympics will be able to build a legacy for Japan’s aging society.

The Olympics games will start on July 24th, 2020 and will end on August 9th, 2020.
