Johanna Konta during her Morocco Open’s first round match against Wang Yafan, managed to save 3 match points to defeat her opponent.
The British no. 1 Konta lost the opening set after her serve faltered but then she showed great determination to recover in her first match of the tournament to win it by 4-6, 7-6 and 6-4. This is Konta’s start of the clay court matches this season.
The world rank no. 47 Konta managed to close the 2nd set with a love tie-break as she drove the game into a decider which she ultimately won.
Konta said to media, “I am very proud of the way I competed in this match; this was a tough match for both of us. I lost the first set and then Wang had 3 match points in the 2nd set. This is why I am very happy that I managed to fight my way to the sound set victory and was also able to make a comeback from being 3-1 in the 3rd set.”
Konta further added to her statement, “This is my first match on a clay court this season, so it has its own unique challenges. I am very happy to have such a good match for the first match of my clay court campaign. There is no easy matching in this event so I am expecting a tough match ahead.”
Next, Konta will contest against Ana Bogdan, the world rank no. 132, for the second round match.
In other matches, the top seed of the event Elise Mertens managed to beat her fellow countrywoman Kristen Flipkens by 6-3 and 6-1.
Other wins of the day were Ajla Tomljanovic, Su-Wei Hsieh and Maria Sakkari.
