Nadal and Medvedev will face each other in final of Rogers Cup

Top-seeded player of the Rogers Cup Rafael Nadal, who is also the defending champion of the Rogers Cup has made it to the final of the tournament after his semifinals opponent, Frenchman Gael Monfils withdrew. 

With this, Nadal gets a bye to the final where he will now face off against Daniil Medvedev of Russia who earlier defeated the 6th seeded Russian player Karen Khachanov in their semifinals match by 6-1 and 7-6.

Medvedev, who is facing off Nadal for the first time in his career said, “It is an extra special match for me. I have played before against Novak and Federer for a few times. But against Nadal, it the first time and there is kind of pressure.”

Nadal won the tournament last year in Toronto for his 4th title of Rogers Cup.

16th seeded Monfils made it to the semis after defeating 10th seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut by 6-4, 3-6 and 7-6 In their Friday night match.

Monfils prior to withdrawing from the tournament said, “I love these night matches, Rafa. I play tennis for this; for these big moments and big shows. It was the safest decision not to play”.

Monfils suffered a left sore ankle in his match against Bautista Agut and withdrew after consulting with his coach.
