No previous French Open champions left – who will seize chance?

The 2026 French Open has taken an unexpected and dramatic turn after the early exits of several major champions, leaving both the men’s and women’s singles draws wide open. When Iga Swiatek was eliminated on Sunday, it marked a significant moment in the tournament, as no previous champions remained in contention. With the competition now entering its decisive stages, a rare opportunity has emerged for new names to be etched into the history books at Roland Garros.

Swiatek, widely known as the “Queen of Clay” for her dominance on the surface, had previously secured three consecutive French Open titles between 2022 and 2024. However, her reign has now firmly ended following a fourth-round defeat to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. The Polish star, who turned 25 on the day of her loss, admitted that tension played a crucial role in her performance. She acknowledged that mental pressure continues to affect her game and emphasized the need to address this recurring issue moving forward.

Kostyuk, on the other hand, delivered a composed and confident performance, showcasing remarkable consistency from the baseline. Entering the tournament with strong momentum after winning titles in Rouen and Madrid, the 23-year-old has now extended her winning streak on clay to 16 matches this season. Despite her impressive run, Kostyuk remains humble, stating that she still has significant progress to make before breaking into the top tier of women’s tennis.

Her next challenge comes in the form of fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, setting up a highly anticipated quarter-final clash. Meanwhile, another quarter-final in the same section will feature Romania’s Sorana Cirstea against rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva. With none of the players in this half having reached a Grand Slam final before, it guarantees that a first-time finalist will emerge.

In the opposite half of the women’s draw, Aryna Sabalenka stands out as the leading contender for the title. The top seed has consistently performed at a high level and is aiming to secure her first French Open crown. However, she faces tough competition from Naomi Osaka, who appears to have finally adapted to clay courts, and Madison Keys, the reigning Australian Open champion. Beyond these established names, the remaining players lack deep Grand Slam experience, further highlighting the unpredictability of this year’s tournament.

The men’s draw has also undergone a dramatic transformation. Pre-tournament expectations suggested a dominant run by top seed Jannik Sinner, especially in the absence of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew due to injury. However, Sinner’s surprising exit, combined with Novak Djokovic’s elimination, has completely reshaped the competition. As a result, the tournament is now guaranteed to crown a first-time Grand Slam champion.

The top half of the men’s draw, in particular, has become highly competitive and unpredictable. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, currently ranked 105th in the world, is the lowest-ranked player still in contention. Despite his ranking, Berrettini brings valuable experience, having reached the Wimbledon final in 2021. Canadian fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and American Frances Tiafoe are also among the notable contenders, each possessing the ability to make a deep run.

Nevertheless, Germany’s Alexander Zverev has emerged as the favorite in this section. At 29 years old, Zverev has long been considered a potential Grand Slam champion but has yet to secure a major title. With many top competitors now out of the tournament, this presents arguably his best opportunity to finally achieve that goal. Although he has expressed confidence, questions remain about whether the added pressure could impact his performance, particularly given his previous struggles in Grand Slam finals.

Zverev’s path to the title is not without challenges. He is set to face 19-year-old Spanish talent Rafael Jodar in the quarter-finals, followed by a potential semi-final clash against either Joao Fonseca or Jakub Mensik, both promising young players. These rising stars represent a new generation eager to make their mark, adding another layer of intrigue to the competition.

Several factors have contributed to the unusually open nature of this year’s French Open. Injuries, illnesses, and the natural aging of veteran players have all played a role in thinning the field. Additionally, an intense heatwave in Paris has significantly altered playing conditions. The high temperatures have made the clay courts firmer, resulting in higher ball bounces and changes in racket string tension. These conditions have tested players physically and mentally, potentially influencing the number of upsets seen throughout the tournament.

Another key aspect has been the psychological pressure associated with opportunity. With so many top players eliminated, those remaining may feel the weight of expectation more heavily than usual. Tennis is a sport where mental strength is just as important as technical skill, and this year’s tournament has highlighted that balance more than ever.

The statistics further underline the competitiveness of the event. Nine of the 16 men’s third-round matches went to a deciding fifth set, a first in the Open era. This level of intensity reflects how evenly matched the players are and how difficult it has become to predict outcomes.

As the tournament heads into its final stages, the question remains: who will seize this golden opportunity? With no clear favorites and a mix of experienced players and rising stars still in contention, the 2026 French Open promises an exciting and unpredictable conclusion. Regardless of who ultimately lifts the trophy, this year’s edition will be remembered as one of the most open and competitive in recent history.
