Brianna Decker, the Olympic gold medalist was standing at the concourse of the SAP Center on Saturday night as she received the congratulatory pat from Blades the Bruin, Boston’s mascot, at the NHL All-Star Game.
This was after one hour that the gold medalist of the Team USA learned that she has won the 25000 dollars prize.
Decker in an interview told the media that she was only feeling honored to have demonstrated the Premier Passer competition during the NHL All-Star Skills Competition. It was not until the exhibition ended that she found out that she recorded the faster time for displaying skills faster than any of the NHL players.
Decker said, “I was not aware of it until someone posted a video of it. Then the videoed got viral and I got shocked about it as I was not expecting it.”
Decker’s unofficial time was 1:06 which is three seconds faster than the last record made by Edmonton Oilers All-Star forward Leon Draisaitl in the competition. For that record, Draisaitl was given a prize of 25000 dollars for finishing first.
This unofficial record was not broadcasted by NBC and was instead captured by a girl named Abby Sorkin who is a junior at Scripps College in Southern California and was attending the Skills Competition.
27 years old Decker was paid for her record by the hockey equipment manufacturer “CCM”.
In addition to this, NHL has also announced that they will also be donating a sum of 25000 dollars to charity on the behalf of the four women players that participated in the competition. The transfer of charity will be based on the choice of women.
NHL did have some serious backlash of not giving the money to the four players but Decker said that money was never the point of their participation. They were here to promote the three-game USA VS Canada Rivalry series that is starting from February 12th to 17th.
