The Saturday night boxing match between Regis Prograis and Kiryl Relikh ended with Prograis taking the WBA super-lightweight belt from Relikh after he got a stoppage victory over the Belarusian in the 6th round. With this win, Prograis now reaches the finals of the World Boxing Super Series.
The Louisiana born fighter managed to make the fight a one-sided affair against Relikh in a bout held at the Cajundome located in Lafayette, Louisiana. This was the first professional title win for Prograis.
Prograis took advantage of the injury which Relikh sustained during the opening round as he was sent crashing down on the Canvas with a crisp body shot.
Relikh was then continued to be peppered by the Southpaw fighter until moments before the bell, Prograis was wobbled by a shot from Relikh.
However, by the time 3rd round started, Prograis had recovered and continued on with his onslaught for the coming three rounds.
After taking massive damage in the fifth, his side asked him he could continue or not. He told his corner to let him try and returned to the fight to just get beaten some more. Before he could sustain further heavy damage, his side threw in the towel midway into the 6th round.
With this win, Prograis’s career record is now 24-0 with 20 Knockout wins. The 30 years old boxer will now fight against the winner of the May 18 fight held between the IBF Champion Ivan Baranchyk and Scotsman Josh Taylor. Their fight will be held in Hydro Arena located in Glasgow.
When Prograis was asked as to whom he really wants to fight in the finals of the WBBS, Prograis said, “honestly, I want to face Josh Taylor because many people say he can beat me. However, at the end of the day, it does not matter to me.”
