Kawhi Leonard raised his arms high up in the air as the whole of Canada celebrated their first NBA championship victory.
From being ‘We are the North’ they are “We Are The Champs”.
Leonard led the Toronto Raptors as they won the country’s first ever major title in the last 26 years of their franchise history. They were able to defeat the two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors by 114-110 o Thursday night in a spectacular Game 6 that will surely be remembered for years.
Leonard, who was soaking wet and had ski goggle perched on his forehead while wearing the champion’s black hat, said, “I wanted to make history here and that is what I did tonight.”
Stephen Curry came short on his contesting 3-pointer in the closing moments of the game as Golden State called pout for a timeout which they did not have, thus giving Leonard a technical free throw with merely 0.9 seconds to the clock.
Leonard, who is the NBA MVP Finals for the 2nd time, came behind Andre Iguodala for a layup as they sound of the buzzer was heard. However, it later went to review and the basket was called off before two free throws by Leonard. This only gave a little delay in celebrations for the winning side.
After it finally ended, a completely amused Leonard let it all out. A Canadian team (not a hockey one at that), was able to win the major title for a major sports leagues. This is the first major win for a Canadian team since the 1993 World Series which the Toronto Blue Jays won.
Curry, with hands on the back of his head, slowly walked away on a thrilling night which led to Klay Thompson having an ACL tear of the left knee but not before scoring 30 points.
After the Raptors won the third game on the home floor of Golden State, the Toronto crowd came out on to the streets as they celebrated the victory by screaming and honking horns.
