Richard Callaghan is the figure skating coach of the USA, the same man who led the skater Tara Lipinski for winning the Olympic Gold Medal in 1998 games and then to lead Todd Eldridge for winning the world championships of 1996 along with winning 6 national titles. On Wednesday, the same figure skating coach was declared by US Center of SafeSport as “permanently ineligible” for having sexual misconduct which involved a minor.
This ban for one of the famed figure skating coaches in the USA came after the 34 years old skating student of Callaghan named Adam Schmidt filed for a lawsuit against Callaghan in which he stated that Callaghan allegedly sexually abused him for many times from the year 1999 to 2001.
Schmidt wrote that sexual misconduct started when he was only 14 years old. The lawsuit also has the name of the national governing body of sport “US Figure Skating” and the “Onyx Ice Arena” located in Detroit where Schmidt was taught by Callaghan.
This sexual misconduct lawsuit against Callaghan emerged after the previous such always filed by Craig Maurizi back in 1999 against Callaghan which was dismissed by USFS.
Maurizi is currently 56 years old and is serving as the Olympic coach. He said that that back in 1976 when he was only 13 years old Callaghan engaged with him in sexual misconduct. He also stated that after he was 18 years old Callaghan tried to sort a sexual relationship with him and this relationship continued until he was 22 years old. During that time Callaghan allegedly also started to sexually engage in sexual misconduct with another 12 years old.
As for the 73 years old Richard Callaghan, he has denied all these allegations. As for the US Figure skating, they issued a statement saying that they have made Callaghan ineligible permanently in compliance with their policies and procedures for the US Center of SafeSport.
