Frenchman Gael Monfils won his ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam after a straight-set win over the former champion, Stan Wawrinka on Sunday.
Monfils won the match by 6-3, 1-6 and 6-2 over the 2015 inner Wawrinka of the tournament, to win his 8th career title. This allowed Monfils to move up 10 spots to be the world no. 23 in the ATP rankings updated on Monday.
The Rotterdam Open’s final was the first match between two unseeded players since the 2008’ match when Michael Llodra beat Robin Soderling.
In other news, Italian player Marco Cecchinato in his match in Buenos Aires against Argentina’s home favorite, Diego Schwartzman, won the third ATP title of his career in the final of the Argentina Open.
World No. 18, Cecchinato defeated Schwartzman by 6-1 and 6-2 to add Argentina Open title to his already won Bapest and Umag titles.
As for the New York Open, Reilly Opelka scored 43 aces as he won his maiden ATP Tour Title against Canadian Brayden Schnur by 6-1 6-7 (9-7) 7-6 (9-7) in the final.
Opelika talking about the match said, “This is what I am probably most proud of. I was tough mentally, even after losing the first sets this week but my first serve helped me out greatly. I was able to play clutch on those big moments.”
