In the fourth weight division fight for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez against Sergey Kovalev, he was able to win the fight held in Las Vegas by a knockout. With this win, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez becomes the world 4-weight division champion.
A destructive heavy right from Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez during the 11th round was the one that resulted in lights out for Kovalev and allowed for Canelo to earn his WBO Light-heavyweight belt.
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the star from Mexico has jumped 2 divisions by winning this fight. The fight which was held between two world-class boxers seemed to be headed for the result of judges but the unexpected 11th round stoppage ended the fight in favor of Canelo.
Despite the knockout win, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was already ahead on 2 of the judges’ scorecards whereas the third was having a draw.
It seemed the fight would be decided by the scorecards because, before the stoppage win, both of these fighters had not seemingly gotten any significant damage.
For the 1st half of the fight, Kovalev made use of his ramrod jab to keep his opponent at bay.
What got Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez ahead on the scorecards were his body shots early on in the fight. Canelo made use of his impressive footwork to make Kovalev tire on his own while staying at a distance away from his hits. The fifth round saw Canelo thudding Kovalev with a left hook to his body.
The middle rounds saw Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez upping his pace as he took advantage of his opponent’s tiredness. For Kovalev, who only had 10 weeks to prepare for this fight following his previous win against Anthony Yade and was picked for this fight, things were starting to take a toll on his body.
Still, Kovalev was able to make the fight more thrilling in the 8th and 9th round by landing heavy jabs on Canelo and created for a tense a few last rounds with the world title being in no clear sight for either opponent.
But in the 11th, out of nowhere, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez produced a heavy right-hand punch to the head of Kovalev which was followed by a left hook and a cold right hand to have him fall to the canvas.
With this win, Canelo now holds the titles in the light and middle-heavyweight divisions.
