Scottish Premiership: Reaction as Fatah penalty secures Dundee United win over St Mirren

Dundee United reignited their fading hopes of a top-six finish in the Scottish Premiership with a hard-earned victory over St Mirren at Tannadice, thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Marcus Fraser and a clinical penalty from Amar Fatah.

The 2-1 win ended a four-game winless run for Jim Goodwin’s side and delivered a timely boost ahead of their Scottish Cup quarter-final showdown with Falkirk. While their league ambitions remain slim, the result injected fresh belief into a squad that has endured a frustrating domestic campaign.

Dream Start for United

Dundee United could hardly have scripted a better beginning. Just eight minutes into the contest, they found themselves ahead — though fortune played its part.

A fierce strike from Vicko Sevelj forced a strong save from St Mirren goalkeeper Shamal George. However, instead of clearing the danger, centre-back Fraser inadvertently directed a header into his own net while attempting to deal with the rebound.

The early breakthrough set the tone, but it did not guarantee a comfortable afternoon. St Mirren, despite a poor record when conceding first this season, gradually grew into the match.

Saints Fight Back

The visitors began to assert themselves in midfield and carved out opportunities before half-time. Dan Nlundulu tested goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer from a tight angle, while Mark O’Hara squandered a promising chance when he dragged a shot wide.

United had their own moment before the interval as Panutche Camara forced George into another save, but the hosts had to settle for a slender one-goal advantage at the break.

Recognising the need for change, St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson made a decisive substitution at half-time, introducing Jake Young for Roland Idowu.

The move paid immediate dividends. A free-kick from the left, delivered by Scott Tanser, caused chaos in the penalty area. When the ball fell kindly to Young, he lashed a sliced effort into the top corner to level proceedings.

Drama and Controversy

With momentum on their side, St Mirren nearly turned the match around shortly after the hour mark. Midfielder Killian Phillips met a cross with a powerful header that crashed against the woodwork — a let-off for the home team.

United’s decisive moment came from an unusual sequence. As a free-kick was swung into the box, defender Alex Gogic raised his arm while appealing for offside. The ball brushed his raised hand following a flick-on from Ross Graham.

After a prolonged VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot. Fatah stepped forward with confidence and dispatched a powerful penalty beyond George, restoring United’s lead and sending the Tannadice crowd into raptures.

Emotional Return for Russell

Moments after the penalty, another wave of noise swept around the stadium as former Scotland international Johnny Russell made his second debut following his return to the club earlier that day.

Russell’s reappearance in the famous tangerine jersey provided a sentimental lift. Although he was unable to add a third goal to ease late tension, United showed resilience during six minutes of added time to secure a morale-boosting triumph.

Goodwin’s Perspective

Manager Jim Goodwin admitted before the match that he had one eye on the opportunity to reach Hampden in the Scottish Cup. Yet he emphasised the importance of not entering that fixture on the back of consecutive league defeats.

After the final whistle, Goodwin praised his players’ physicality and competitive spirit.

“We set up to win individual battles,” he explained. “The back three were strong in first contacts, and the midfield trio were outstanding. Whoever controlled midfield was always likely to win.”

The victory narrows the gap to sixth-placed Falkirk to nine points with three games remaining before the split. While mathematically possible, breaking into the top six remains a tall order. However, the psychological impact of this win could prove invaluable ahead of Friday’s cup tie.

Robinson’s Frustration

For Robinson, it was another painful afternoon. He had anticipated a scrappy encounter on a difficult pitch but could not have predicted the costly defensive errors that ultimately defined the game.

“The two goals sum up our season,” he reflected. “It feels like everything that can go wrong has gone wrong.”

Despite positives in midfield — with O’Hara, Baccus, and Phillips restoring some balance — St Mirren’s league position remains precarious. Sitting just three points above Kilmarnock and the relegation play-off spot, concerns about survival are intensifying.

Season at a Crossroads

The result carries contrasting implications. For Dundee United, it restores belief and momentum at a critical juncture. Reaching Hampden would reshape perceptions of what has otherwise been a challenging campaign.

For St Mirren, the defeat underscores ongoing vulnerabilities, particularly on the road. With Premiership safety still not assured, league priorities may overshadow cup ambitions.

United now travel to face Falkirk in their Scottish Cup quarter-final, while St Mirren host Partick Thistle in their own last-eight clash.

As the season approaches its decisive phase, Dundee United head into a pivotal encounter with renewed confidence, while St Mirren are left grappling with familiar frustrations.
