Scotland & England fans in Boston face train fare hike
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Fans from both Scotland and England who are planning to attend World Cup group-stage matches in Boston are facing significantly increased travel expenses, particularly when it comes to train fares. The situation has sparked frustration among supporters, as prices for transportation have risen sharply compared to what is typically charged for similar journeys.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), which manages public transport services in the Boston area, has confirmed that special matchday train tickets will cost $80 (£60) for a return journey between South Station in central Boston and the stadium located in Foxborough. This represents a dramatic increase when compared to the usual matchday return fare of $20 (£15). On non-matchdays, a single ticket for the same route generally costs around $8.75 (£6.50), making the World Cup pricing more than four times higher than standard rates.

The sharp rise in ticket prices has raised concerns among fans, especially those traveling from abroad to support their teams. Scotland is scheduled to play two of its group-stage matches at the Boston venue, facing Haiti national football team on 14 June and Morocco national football team five days later. Meanwhile, England national football team will take on Ghana national football team at the same stadium on 23 June.

Supporter groups have not remained silent on the issue. Paul Goodwin, co-founder of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, strongly criticized the pricing structure, calling it “totally out of order.” He expressed concerns about the financial strain such costs could place on fans, suggesting that many may have to rely on credit cards or stretch their budgets significantly to attend matches. His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among supporters that the sport is becoming increasingly inaccessible to ordinary fans.

He further noted that this situation is yet another example of how football, particularly at the highest level, is drifting away from its grassroots origins. According to him, the loyal supporters who regularly attend local matches—often in less glamorous conditions—are being priced out of major international events like the World Cup.

The controversy over transportation costs comes shortly after widespread criticism of ticket prices for the tournament itself. During the first open sale of World Cup tickets, FIFA was found to be charging as much as $10,990 (£8,333) for seats at the final. In addition, fans attempting to secure tickets through FIFA’s official resale platform have reported significantly inflated prices, further compounding the financial burden on supporters.

The Boston venue, officially referred to as Boston Stadium for the duration of the tournament due to sponsorship regulations, is more commonly known as Gillette Stadium. This stadium is home to the New England Patriots and is located approximately 22 miles from central Boston. The journey typically takes just over an hour by train, making rail transport one of the most practical options for fans.

The stadium is set to host seven matches during the tournament, including a quarter-final, making it a key venue for the event. However, its distance from the city center has made transportation logistics a critical issue. With no direct subway or MBTA bus services available to the stadium, fans are largely dependent on the special train services being offered.

Adding to the frustration is the fact that these train tickets are limited in availability and non-refundable. Sales are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 16:00 BST, and demand is expected to be high. Even families traveling with children will not be spared from the increased costs. While children under 11 typically travel for free on MBTA trains, they will be required to purchase tickets for these special matchday services.

For those considering driving as an alternative, the costs are equally discouraging. Parking at the stadium starts at $175 (£132) per vehicle, making it an expensive option for most fans. This pricing strategy has led many to feel that there are limited affordable choices for attending matches.

Supporters’ organizations have voiced their disappointment publicly. The Football Supporters’ Association criticized the decision, highlighting that a journey which normally costs $20 has been inflated to an unreasonable level. They argued that organizers had a responsibility to ensure affordable and sustainable transport options, especially given the stadium’s distance from Boston’s city center.

The association also pointed out that the World Cup should be an inclusive event, accessible to fans from all backgrounds. Instead, rising costs for tickets, travel, and accommodation are creating barriers that prevent many supporters from participating in what is meant to be a global celebration of football.

In response to the criticism, the MBTA has defended its pricing by emphasizing the scale of operations required for the World Cup. The authority has announced plans to run 14 express train services between South Station and the stadium on matchdays, aiming to accommodate large crowds efficiently.

Phillip Eng, interim Secretary of Transportation and CEO of the MBTA, stated that the organization is working to balance the needs of World Cup visitors with those of regular commuters who rely on the transport system year-round. He noted that the goal is to deliver an unprecedented level of service during the tournament while maintaining normal operations for daily riders.

Despite these assurances, many fans remain unconvinced. The lack of alternative transport options, combined with high prices and limited ticket availability, has left supporters feeling that they are being unfairly charged.

Ultimately, the situation highlights a broader issue within modern football: the increasing commercialization of the sport. As major tournaments continue to grow in scale and profitability, the cost of attending them is rising accordingly. For many fans, this trend is making it more difficult to experience the game in person.

As the World Cup approaches, it remains to be seen whether organizers will address these concerns or whether supporters will have to bear the financial burden. One thing is clear—while the excitement of the tournament continues to build, so too does the frustration among those who feel priced out of the experience.
