Serena Williams wins over Giulia Gatto-Monticone and makes it to the 2nd round of Wimbledon

Serna Williams managed to win her 1st round match of the Wimbledon against Giulia Gatto-Monticone by 6-2 and 7-5 to reach the 2nd round of the tournament.

Serena, the 23 times Grand Slam winner has only played in 5 major tournaments this year before making it to the Wimbledon. This match shows that age has finally caught up to her as she had to fight a tough battle before winning the match.

She was only able to seal the victory after breaking crucial breaks in both sets and win the match in 80 minutes long match.

As for Giulia Gatto-Monticone, this was a win despite the loss because she was the first time entrant of the Wimbledon in her career. With this win, Williams will now advance to the 2nd round where she will face Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan who won over Kristyna Pliskova, sister of Karolina Pliskova.

As for the current world rank no. 1 Ashleigh Barty, she also made a winning start of her Wimbledon campaign with a win over Chinese player Saisai Zheng by 6-4 and 6-2.

Barty is aiming to match her French Open win with another Grand Slam title of the Wimbledon this year. She earlier won the Birmingham Open in her warm-up for the grass court Wimbledon tournament.

As for the ringing champion of the Wimbledon, Angelique Kerber, she pulled it through against her 1st round opponent Tatjana Maria of Germany with a 6-4 and 6-3 victory at the Center Court.

Kerber manage dot win the last year’s Wimbledon title after defeating Serena Williams in the final.

One more former champion of Wimbledon, Petra Kvitova also will join the likes of Kerber in the 2nd round as she breezed through with an easy victory over Ons Jabeur by 6-4 and 6-2.

As for Maria Sharapova, bad news came for her as she suffered from an injury during her match with Pauline Parmentier to withdraw from the tournament.
