Smith & Starc lead Sixers to Big Bash final

Sydney Sixers secured their place in the Big Bash League final with a dominant 57-run victory over defending champions Hobart Hurricanes in the Challenger, setting up yet another blockbuster showdown against Perth Scorchers on Sunday.

Asked to bat first, the Sixers produced a commanding batting display, piling up an imposing total of 198 for eight. The innings was anchored by star batter Steve Smith, whose composed and authoritative knock of 65 provided the backbone of the total. Smith mixed controlled stroke play with timely aggression, ensuring the Sixers maintained momentum throughout the innings.

Support came from several middle-order batters who capitalised on the platform Smith laid. Captain Moises Henriques played a sharp cameo, scoring 19 from just eight balls, while Joel Davies added valuable acceleration with 27 off 12 deliveries. Lachlan Shaw also made a meaningful contribution, striking 21 from 13 balls to push the total close to the 200 mark.

Despite the Sixers’ dominance, Hobart Hurricanes pacer Riley Meredith was a bright spot for the defending champions. The Australia quick bowled with pace and intent, claiming 3-52 and providing Hurricanes with some resistance during the latter stages of the innings.

Chasing a daunting target of 199, Hurricanes suffered an early setback when in-form batter Mitch Owen was dismissed for 13. Steve Smith once again played a pivotal role, taking a sharp catch off Mitchell Starc, who finished with figures of 2-29. Fellow opener Tim Ward fell shortly after, leaving Hurricanes reeling at 29-2 inside the powerplay.

Captain Ben McDermott attempted to steady the innings alongside Beau Webster, and the pair added 48 runs in a brief rebuilding effort. However, Webster struggled to find rhythm, managing 24 from 27 balls before being dismissed by Ben Dwarshuis. That wicket proved a turning point, as Hurricanes were suddenly facing a steep requirement of 122 runs from just 61 balls.

The pressure of the chase quickly took its toll. Wickets began to fall in rapid succession as the Sixers’ bowling attack tightened its grip. Within three overs, Hurricanes slumped to 91-6, with experienced campaigners Matthew Wade, Nikhil Chaudhary and Chris Jordan all dismissed cheaply.

Ben Dwarshuis led the bowling charge with an impressive spell, returning figures of 3-26. His ability to strike at crucial moments ensured Hurricanes never gained any momentum. Starc provided pace and control at the other end, while the Sixers’ fielding standards remained sharp throughout.

McDermott, Hurricanes’ last real hope, was eventually dismissed for 40 in the 14th over, effectively ending any chance of a late comeback. From there, the collapse was inevitable, and Hobart were bowled out for 141 in just 17.2 overs.

The victory underlined Sydney Sixers’ experience and composure in high-pressure matches. Their balanced performance with both bat and ball showcased why they remain one of the most successful franchises in Big Bash League history.

Sunday’s final will mark the sixth time the Sixers and Perth Scorchers have faced each other in a BBL decider, further cementing the rivalry between the two powerhouse teams. The Scorchers enter the final chasing a record-extending sixth BBL title, while the Sixers will be aiming to lift the trophy for the fourth time.

With both sides boasting deep squads, international experience and a proven track record in finals, the stage is set for another classic Big Bash showdown. Fans can expect a fiercely contested match as two of the league’s most decorated teams battle for supremacy.
