Barbora Strycova, who lost her biggest career’ semi finals match three days ago, was still able to wash that loss off with a win at the doubles final.
Barbora Strycova was paired with Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei and the pair went on to win the Women’s doubles of the Wimbledon on Sunday against Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her Chinese pair Xu Yifan in a match held at Center Court by 6-2 and 6-4.
Strycova said, “There are simply no words to describe this feeling of winning. It is kind of unreal but at the same time, it feels so amazing.”
After this win, Strycova will now be the world nark no. 1 in the doubles rankings.
The match which had earlier been scheduled for play on Saturday had to be postponed until Sunday due to the men’s double final going much longer than anticipated, finishing after 5 sets.
Talking about Saturday’s delay, Strycova said, “We were waiting for a long time. Yesterday was tough for us because we were ready but then the supervisor came to us. If they split sets then we cancel. As for us, we were warming up and it was tough for us.”
Then, even on the decided Sunday, they had to wait due to the match of men’s singles between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer going into the fifth set tiebreaker at 12-12. This is the first year that this rule has been placed.
Hsieh of Taiwan said of this rule, “I am glad that Wimbledon added this rule or otherwise I will keep eating and get fat.”
For Hsieh, she won her career’ 3rd Grand Slam doubles title. She has earlier won the 2013 Wimbledon title and the 2014’s French Open title, both times being partnered with Peng Shaui.
Hsieh and Strycova have played as a pair 10 times in their career with 9 coming this season. They also played at this season’s Birmingham Open and won while having lost at the 3rd round of the Roland Garros doubles.
