The World Cup line-up is complete – here’s what you need to know
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now officially complete, with the final six nations confirming their places in what will be the largest tournament in the competition’s history. This expanded edition will feature 48 teams and will be hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July.

The last teams to secure qualification were DR Congo national football team and Iraq national football team, who clinched their spots with crucial victories over Jamaica national football team and Bolivia national football team respectively. Their success marked the conclusion of a lengthy qualification journey that began in September 2023 and involved teams from all six global confederations.

The final stages of qualification were decided through intense UEFA and intercontinental play-offs, bringing high drama to the closing phase of the campaign. Among the most notable outcomes was the elimination of Italy national football team, who were defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team. Meanwhile, Czech Republic national football team, Turkey national football team, and Sweden national football team secured their places in the tournament.

Out of the 48 teams participating, the three host nations automatically qualified, while 43 teams earned their spots through regional qualification competitions. The remaining two places were decided via intercontinental play-offs, ensuring a diverse and competitive field for the tournament.

With all teams now confirmed, attention turns to what promises to be a historic World Cup. This edition will introduce a new format and significantly expand the scale of the competition.

For the first time, 48 teams will compete, an increase from the 32 teams that participated in previous tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This expansion means there will be a total of 104 matches played, making it the largest World Cup ever staged.

The tournament will be held across 16 cities, with 11 located in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. This marks the first time the World Cup will be jointly hosted by three countries and spread across such a wide geographical area.

The competition will also last longer than ever before, running for 39 days. This is a notable increase compared to the 29-day duration of the 2022 tournament and the 32-day schedules of the 2014 and 2018 editions.

A new group-stage format will be introduced, featuring 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, along with the eight best third-placed teams. This structure will lead to an expanded knockout phase, starting with a round of 32.

The opening match of the tournament will take place at the iconic Estadio Azteca, where Mexico national football team will face South Africa national football team. The final will be held at MetLife Stadium, where the new world champions will be crowned on 19 July.

Due to the vast geographical spread of venues across multiple time zones, the scheduling of matches will be more complex than in previous tournaments. A total of 13 different kick-off times have been planned to accommodate the various locations.

For European audiences, this means that some matches will take place during late-night or early-morning hours. Several group-stage matches are scheduled to begin between midnight and 5:00 AM BST, creating a unique viewing experience for fans.

For example, matches in cities like Kansas City and San Francisco will often take place at times that are less convenient for European viewers. However, the most common kick-off time will still be around 8:00 PM BST, ensuring that many games remain accessible to a global audience.

Looking at specific teams, England national football team will compete in Group L, where they are set to face Croatia national football team, Ghana national football team, and Panama national football team. Meanwhile, Scotland national football team will play in Group C against Haiti national football team, Morocco national football team, and Brazil national football team.

As for the favorites, Spain national football team are widely considered the leading contenders after an impressive qualification campaign. Their squad includes talented players such as Pedri, Rodri, and Lamine Yamal.

England national football team are also seen as strong challengers, having qualified with a perfect record. With key players like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, they are expected to compete at the highest level.

France national football team, led by a powerful attacking lineup including Kylian Mbappe, are another major contender. Meanwhile, defending champions Argentina national football team will aim to retain their title after dominating South American qualification.

Despite some inconsistency, Brazil national football team can never be ruled out, given their history and depth of talent.

There are also several teams that could emerge as surprise contenders. Norway national football team, led by Erling Haaland, performed exceptionally well in qualifying and could make a deep run in the tournament.

Morocco national football team and Japan national football team are also strong teams capable of causing upsets. Additionally, Colombia national football team and Egypt national football team, featuring Mohamed Salah, are expected to perform well.

Host nation Canada national football team could also surprise fans, especially with the advantage of playing on home soil.

This tournament will also introduce several debutants. Curacao national football team will make history as one of the smallest nations ever to compete in a World Cup. Cape Verde national football team, Uzbekistan national football team, and Jordan national football team will also participate for the first time.

These teams represent the growing diversity of international football and highlight the opportunities created by the expanded format. Their presence adds excitement and unpredictability to the competition.

In conclusion, the 2026 World Cup promises to be a landmark event in football history. With an expanded field, a new format, and a global stage spread across three nations, it will offer fans an unforgettable experience. As the tournament approaches, anticipation continues to build for what could be the most exciting World Cup ever.
