Doncic breaks Bryant points record for LA Lakers

In a remarkable display of scoring brilliance, Luka Dončić etched his name into Los Angeles Lakers history by surpassing a long-standing record previously held by the legendary Kobe Bryant. The Slovenian superstar delivered an outstanding performance in the Lakers’ 127-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring 42 points and setting a new benchmark for the most points recorded by a Lakers player in a single calendar month.

Dončić’s total of 579 points throughout March eclipsed Bryant’s iconic record of 578 points, which had stood unchallenged for nearly two decades since 2006. Breaking such a milestone not only highlights Dončić’s exceptional scoring ability but also underscores his growing impact since joining one of the NBA’s most storied franchises.

A Record Built on Consistency and Dominance

What makes this achievement even more impressive is the consistency Dončić demonstrated over the course of the month. Rather than relying on a single explosive outing, he steadily accumulated points game after game, showcasing his all-around offensive arsenal. From deep three-pointers to crafty finishes at the rim and precise mid-range shooting, Dončić proved nearly impossible to defend.

This record-breaking performance came shortly after his return from a one-game suspension, which was issued after he received his 16th technical foul of the season. Instead of slowing him down, the brief absence appeared to fuel his determination. His 42-point performance against Cleveland was a clear statement that he remains one of the league’s most dominant offensive players.

Team Success Remains the Priority

Despite achieving a historic milestone, Dončić was quick to shift the focus away from individual accolades. Speaking after the game, he emphasized that victories matter far more than personal records.

He noted that while breaking records is special, it holds little value without team success. The Lakers’ current run—winning 15 of their last 17 games—has been far more meaningful to him. This mindset reflects a maturity and leadership quality that has made him a key figure in the team’s resurgence.

The Lakers have been one of the hottest teams in the league, climbing to third place in the Western Conference standings. Their strong form has already secured them a playoff berth, along with the Pacific Division title, signaling their intent to compete for a championship.

Following in Kobe Bryant’s Footsteps

Breaking a record set by Kobe Bryant carries immense significance. Bryant is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history and an enduring symbol of excellence for the Lakers organization. His scoring feats and relentless work ethic defined an era, making his records particularly meaningful.

For Dončić to surpass Bryant’s mark places him in elite company and strengthens his legacy within the franchise. Interestingly, Dončić has already drawn comparisons to Bryant in terms of his scoring mentality and ability to take over games when it matters most.

Adding to this narrative, Dončić recently became the first Lakers player since Bryant to score 60 points in a single game. That performance came in a victory over the Miami Heat, further solidifying his reputation as a prolific scorer capable of delivering extraordinary performances.

LeBron James Continues to Make History

While Dončić’s record-breaking night grabbed the headlines, LeBron James quietly added another milestone to his already unparalleled career. The veteran forward scored 14 points against the Cavaliers and achieved his 1,229th combined regular-season and playoff win.

This accomplishment allowed James to surpass the previous record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, further cementing his place among basketball’s all-time greats. At this stage of his career, James continues to demonstrate remarkable longevity and versatility, contributing on both ends of the court.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised James for his all-around contributions, highlighting his ability to impact the game in multiple ways. Whether it’s scoring, playmaking, or defense, James remains a crucial leader for the team.

A Complete Team Effort Behind the Lakers’ Success

Although individual performances from stars like Dončić and James have been pivotal, the Lakers’ recent success has been driven by a collective team effort. Players such as Austin Reaves have stepped up when needed, providing valuable support and ensuring the team maintains its momentum.

Coach Redick emphasized that while certain players may dominate the headlines on any given night, the team’s success is rooted in contributions from every member of the roster. This balanced approach has made the Lakers one of the most dangerous teams heading into the postseason.

Looking Ahead to the Playoffs

With the playoffs approaching, the Lakers are in a strong position to make a deep run. Their current form, combined with the leadership of Dončić and James, has made them legitimate contenders for the NBA title.

The team’s ability to maintain consistency, stay healthy, and continue their winning momentum will be key factors in determining their success. If Dončić can sustain his scoring form and the supporting cast continues to perform, the Lakers could be poised for another championship run.

A Historic Month to Remember

March 2026 will be remembered as a defining chapter in Luka Dončić’s career. Breaking a record set by Kobe Bryant is no small feat, and doing so while leading the Lakers to a dominant stretch of victories makes the achievement even more special.

As Dončić continues to evolve and adapt, his impact on the Lakers—and the NBA as a whole—will only grow stronger. For fans, this is just another glimpse of what could become one of the most remarkable careers in basketball history.
