Wimbledon 2019: Rafael Nadal defeats Nick Kyrgios while John Isner and Marin Cilic ousted from second round

In a high-quality revenge match between Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios for the 2nd round ended in a win for Nadal on the Center Court.

This clash was the most anticipated one at this tournament in light of the heated exchange between both players most recently. Still, Nadal overcame his emotions to win his match against Kyrgios by 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 and 7-6.

This is the 10th time in the career of Spaniard that he has advanced to the 3rd round of the tournament and will now face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga next.

As for the 9th seeded John Isner of America, he was not that lucky as he failed to win over Mikhail Kukushkin. Still, it was a hard-earned victory for Kukushkin who won the match by 6-4, 6-7, 4-6, 6-1 and 6-4.

The 2018 semifinals of the Wimbledon, Isner had no warm-up tournaments on grass courts for the Wimbledon as he was suffering from a foot injury that came to haunt him back.

Isner said, “It was a very disappointing loss for me. I think this shows my lack of preparation and I was aware that something like that was very much possible. It hurts to be going out of this tournament so early on but it is not that bad. I will now go back home and practice and try to get myself in the best shape.”

Another high profile exit of the 2nd round matches was the last year’s runner up Marin Cilic who got defeat at hands of Joao Sousa by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4.

In other matches of the day, the champion of last week’s Eastbourne Taylor Fritz could not capitalize on his last title win as he was defeat by Jan Lennard Struff by 6-4, 6-3, 5-7 and 7-6.

Sam Querrey is on the right track after beating Dominic Thiem in the first round match and now beating Andrey Rublev by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3.

As for the last important match of the day, it was between Marcos Baghdatis and Matteo Berrettini which Berrettini won by 6-1, 7-6 and 6-3. This was the last professional match of Baghdatis’s 20 years long tennis career. He had tears in his eyes as he waved goodbye to sports and its audience on Court Two.
