World Boxing Super Series: Mairis Briedis beats Krysztof Glowacki to claim a controversial KO victory

Mairis Briedis was able to defeat Krysztof Glowacki for a controversial KO victory to secure himself a spot in the World Boxing Series final on Saturday night. Briedis defeated Glowacki in the third round to make it to the WBS finals.

Briedis who earlier lost his match against Oleksandr Uysk in the last year’s WBS semi-finals was able to make up for his shame in front his home crowd in Latvia in a fight held at Riga Arena.

Briedis said, “During the 2nd round he punched the back of my head. I think that referee did not do much about it so I did a dirty thing for myself for which I am embarrassed. It was my old Muay Thai style.”

The opening round saw the home favorite Briedis being engaged in a cagey opening round against Glowacki as both men failed to land decent shots on each other.

The 2nd round saw the fight going to an extreme after Briedis responded angrily to being hit on the back of his head as he landed an elbow to the Polish fighter and sent him to the canvas.

After sizing up for a few moments Briedis flew into action as he landed a strong right to send Glowacki back to the canvas for the 2nd time.

32 years old Glowacki made it back to his feet with wobbly legs as he was dropped for the third time in the same round and was saved only after the bell sounded.

The confusion was seen after the Polish side demanded an explanation from the fight’s referee but the fight was resumed for a 3rd round which then saw Briedis landing two uppercuts followed with his strong right hook to end the fight.
