Are Arsenal Really a “Boring” Team? Critics Debate Style as Title Charge Continues

As Arsenal F.C. push closer to a possible Premier League title, discussions about their playing style have intensified. Despite being in a strong position across multiple competitions, some former players and pundits have questioned whether the team’s success is built on attractive football or simply efficiency.

The debate gained attention after Arsenal secured a victory over Chelsea F.C. thanks to two goals scored from corner kicks. Following that match, former Blackburn striker and Premier League champion Chris Sutton suggested that if Arsenal eventually win the league, they could be remembered as one of the least aesthetically pleasing champions in the competition’s history.

Another former champion, Paul Scholes, also weighed in on the discussion, recently claiming that Arsenal might become the “most boring” team to lift the trophy.

Arsenal’s impressive season so far

Regardless of these criticisms, the numbers suggest that Mikel Arteta and his squad are enjoying an outstanding season.

Arsenal currently hold a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. In addition to their strong league campaign, they have reached the final of the League Cup, advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and remain in contention in the UEFA Champions League.

With favourable draws in several competitions, Arsenal are still mathematically capable of winning four major trophies in the same season—a remarkable achievement if it were to happen.

Arteta, however, has made it clear that for him the primary focus is not style but results.

Speaking ahead of an upcoming match, the Spanish coach explained that his objective is simply to play the most effective football possible to maximize the chances of victory.

According to Arteta, adapting to the demands of each match is far more important than satisfying external expectations about aesthetics.

Goals and statistics tell an interesting story

Statistics from data company Opta reveal that Arsenal have scored 59 goals in their first 30 league matches this season.

This gives them an average of approximately 1.97 goals per game. While this rate would make them one of the lower-scoring champions in recent years, it is still higher than several past title-winning sides.

For example, Leicester City F.C. scored fewer goals on average when they famously won the Premier League during the 2015-16 season.

Arsenal’s scoring rate is also higher than several championship teams from Manchester United F.C., as well as all three league-winning sides managed by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

Even the legendary Arsenal squad known as the Arsenal Invincibles averaged slightly fewer goals per game during their unbeaten title-winning campaign.

Heavy reliance on set-pieces

Where Arsenal’s critics may have a stronger argument is in the way those goals are scored.

Of the 59 league goals Arsenal have recorded so far this season, 24 have come from set-pieces such as corners and free kicks.

This means approximately 41 percent of their goals originate from dead-ball situations, a much higher proportion than that of most previous Premier League champions.

Interestingly, Sutton and Scholes themselves played for teams that relied heavily on set-pieces.

Sutton was part of the Blackburn Rovers F.C. side that won the league in the 1994-95 season.

Meanwhile Scholes played for the Manchester United team that lifted the title in 2007-08.

Both of those championship teams scored 80 goals that season, and around 35 percent of those goals came from set-pieces—the highest ratio recorded among champions before Arsenal’s current campaign.

Open-play scoring numbers

While Arsenal’s effectiveness from corners and free kicks is clear, their open-play statistics paint a slightly different picture.

So far this season the team has averaged about 1.17 goals per game from open play.

The only Premier League champion to record a similarly low figure was the Manchester United squad that won the league during the competition’s inaugural 1992-93 season.

Supporters of Arsenal, however, argue that dominance in set-pieces should be seen as a tactical strength rather than a weakness.

Football matches are often decided by small details, and mastering dead-ball situations can provide a crucial advantage.

Wayne Rooney defends Arsenal

One prominent voice who disagrees with the criticism is Wayne Rooney.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former striker said he actually enjoys watching Arsenal play and believes their performances have been impressive.

Rooney pointed out that set-pieces are a legitimate part of the game and that successful teams should use every possible tool to secure victory.

From his perspective, Arsenal’s ability to score from these situations simply demonstrates good preparation and tactical awareness.

Debate with Brighton manager

Another critic of Arsenal’s approach has been Fabian Hurzeler, who previously commented on the team’s playing style after his side lost 1-0 to the Gunners.

However, Hurzeler later revealed that he and Arteta exchanged respectful text messages discussing their differing opinions.

He emphasized that football often involves defending your own viewpoint while maintaining respect for others.

Despite his earlier comments, Hurzeler acknowledged that if Arsenal win the league title they will have fully deserved it.

Upcoming clash with Everton

Arsenal’s next league match is against Everton F.C..

The fixture has added significance for Arteta, who spent five years playing at Everton under the guidance of the club’s current manager David Moyes.

Moyes also came to Arsenal’s defense during the debate about their style of play.

He argued that being strong and effective in set-pieces should never be viewed as a flaw.

According to Moyes, football managers must constantly search for ways to help their teams win, and that sometimes requires using every possible tactical advantage.

Winning ugly in football history

The idea of “winning ugly” is not new in football.

For instance, Leicester City’s remarkable title victory in 2015-16 was built largely on efficiency rather than flamboyant attacking football.

Ten of their goals came from penalties, and the team recorded the fewest touches inside the opposition penalty area of any champion on record.

Additionally, many of their victories were narrow, with 14 of their 23 wins coming by a single-goal margin.

Arsenal’s current season does not follow that same pattern entirely.

Only five of their league victories so far have been 1-0 wins, which is significantly fewer than other champions.

For example, Chelsea recorded 11 wins by that scoreline during their dominant 2004-05 campaign, while Manchester United achieved 10 such victories in 2008-09.

Discipline and fair play

Another point worth noting is that Arsenal are not relying on overly aggressive tactics.

The team has received just 40 yellow cards in 30 matches, a figure considerably lower than some previous champions.

Chelsea, for instance, accumulated a total of 73 yellow cards during their 2014-15 title-winning campaign.

Arsenal are also close to achieving a rare milestone: winning the Premier League without having a single player sent off during the entire season.

If they accomplish this, they would become only the fourth team in league history to do so.

A balanced perspective

While Arsenal may not play the dazzling style associated with teams like FC Barcelona during their golden era, their approach is far from unusual among successful championship teams.

Many previous Premier League winners have relied on pragmatic tactics, defensive organization, and set-piece efficiency.

In the end, Arsenal’s season will likely be judged not by stylistic debates but by the trophies they manage to secure.

And if they do lift the Premier League trophy, the statistics suggest their success will not be dramatically different from many champions who came before them.
