Angelique Kerber, the defending champion of the Wimbledon, unfortunately, could not hold on to her title as she crashed out the tournament during her second-round match. She was defeated by Lauren Davis at the match by 2-6, 6-2 and 6-1.
Davis, the Lucky Loser of the tournament was down by 1 set but then made a splendid comeback to claim her first victory over the last year Wimbledon champion.
Kerber has not won a single tournament since last year but has shown an overall great performance so far as she made it to the finals of Eastbourne earlier last week.
As for Kerber’s opponent of finals from last year, Serena Williams she was also going to be ousted out of the tournament but then overcame her scary second round match to win it.
7 times Wimbledon champion, Williams lost the first set against Kaja Juvan by 6-2 and tried to find her range in the second set.
With the HRH Duchess of Sussex watching her match, Serena overcame her difficulties to beat the qualifier by 2-6, 6-2 and 6-4.
In her post-match interview, Serena said, “I just need to remember that I am best at closing the matches. I am good at it. Like is say it is experience and the match play. In the past few years, I have not played that many matches and now I am just trying to get back.”
Williams is now doing her preparation for the mixed doubles of Wimbledon with Andy Murray and will play against Julia Goerges next.
In comparison to high names like Kerber and Serena, the world rank no., 1 Ashleigh Barty is seemingly maintaining her top form as she got a dominating win over her opponent Alison Van Uytvanck by 6-1, and 6-3.
