Lucky break that changed Alexander-Arnold’s Real future
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

When Trent Alexander-Arnold was brought off the bench in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Valencia last weekend, there was plenty of excitement from the club’s supporters. After yet another long spell on the sidelines, fans had seen very little of the England defender this season, and his appearance hinted at a pivotal chapter in both his campaign and Real Madrid’s push across competitions.

Since completing his move to Real Madrid in June 2025, Alexander-Arnold — formerly of Liverpool — has only featured 17 times in all competitions. Two separate injuries have repeatedly interrupted his rhythm, leaving him unable to build sustained form or form a strong bond with the Madrid fanbase. Adding to that challenge was a coaching change: a promising working relationship with then–manager Xabi Alonso became irrelevant when Alonso was sacked after less than eight months in charge.

Now though, Alexander-Arnold is fit again at a moment when it matters most. Real Madrid are approaching the decisive phase of the season, and his return opens the door for him to reassert his influence at right-back and beyond.

How the Season Unfolded

Alexander-Arnold’s season began with promise after a strong showing in the Club World Cup, where he started five of Madrid’s six matches and displayed the attacking instincts familiar from his Premier League days. Initially, he shared right-back duties with Real captain Dani Carvajal. Spanish media were quick to praise his early outings, remarking that he “showcased his trademark ability to drift inside from full-back,” offering key passages of creativity.

However, that momentum did not last long. In Madrid’s opening Champions League fixture in September, Alexander-Arnold suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out for seven weeks. Local coverage described the setback as “a blow to Trent’s new chapter,” underlining the timing’s impact on both player and club.

When he finally returned in November, it was at Anfield — facing his old club Liverpool. The emotional return demonstrated his resilience, and over the next few weeks he made five further appearances. Spanish newspaper AS noted that initial criticism directed at Alexander-Arnold stemmed “from a lack of understanding of the footballing ability the England international has always possessed.”

Just as it seemed he was settling in and winning over supporters, a calf/quad issue struck in December during a match against Athletic Club. The injury kept him out of action for another two months, an absence Alexander-Arnold later described as leaving him “absolutely gutted.”

That spell lasted 14 matches, meaning his return last weekend was highly anticipated.

Reaction to His Long-Awaited Return

Even though he only saw about 15 minutes of action against Valencia, the response from Real Madrid’s supporters was overwhelmingly positive. On social media, many fans felt the team’s dynamic shifted noticeably once he entered the match:

  • “Trent Alexander-Arnold’s minutes against Valencia felt like a prime performance. Our style of play even changed!”
  • “He completely changed the game when he came on. Does he deserve to start every match?”
  • “His passes are so satisfying. Football has missed him.”

Those reactions highlight the high hopes around his reintegration, especially with Real Madrid’s Champions League knockout first leg against Benfica just around the corner.

However, head coach Álvaro Arbeloa was careful not to feed the hype. In his first public remarks regarding Alexander-Arnold since being appointed, Arbeloa emphasized that his priority remains the defender’s full recovery.

“After being out for a long time, we are taking the same approach with him as with others returning from injury,” Arbeloa said. “We are proceeding cautiously and calmly because what we want is for him to find his rhythm, his best playing form. That’s how it will be with Trent.”

Arbeloa’s measured comments helped dispel earlier rumours that Alexander-Arnold might not fit into the club’s future plans — speculation Real Madrid were keen to quash. Instead, the coach’s words suggested that the England international remains very much part of the club’s long-term vision. Arbeloa, a former right-back for both Liverpool and Real Madrid himself, may be uniquely positioned to support and strengthen that relationship off the pitch as much as on it.

Where He Fits in Going Forward

Tactical changes within the squad have made the right-back slot more fluid. With Federico Valverde moving into central midfield to cover for the injured Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid have a slightly different attacking structure. That shift potentially clears space for Alexander-Arnold to feature more prominently on the right.

At Arbeloa’s disposal now are several options:

  • Dani Carvajal – the experienced captain, currently fit after knee surgery but largely unused by Arbeloa since September.
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold – returning to full fitness and eyed for more minutes.
  • Federico Valverde – can fill in as an emergency right-back.
  • David Jimenez – a promising academy product who started against Valencia.

Carvajal’s situation adds further intrigue. His struggles with injuries and the absence of a contract renewal have seen him limited in minutes under Arbeloa. With his deal set to expire in the summer and little progress on extending it, the door could be opening for Alexander-Arnold to become Madrid’s preferred choice down the right.

How quickly Arbeloa reintegrates him — whether he eases him back or entrusts him with a starting role immediately — will be one of the defining tactical decisions of the coming weeks. Given the importance of upcoming matches in both La Liga and Europe, that choice will be watched closely.

World Cup Selection: An Uphill Battle?

While Alexander-Arnold’s return excites club fans, his chances of making England’s squad for the summer World Cup currently look slim. Limited playing time this season has made it difficult for him to build the consistency national coach Thomas Tuchel typically prizes for selection.

Earlier in the season, Alexander-Arnold was left out of England’s World Cup qualifying squad, with Tuchel opting instead for Reece James and Tino Livramento. The England boss acknowledged his respect for Alexander-Arnold — “He’s a great player who will always be in contention” — but stressed that, for that particular squad, others were chosen due to the depth of competition.

Even if Alexander-Arnold now puts together a run of standout performances for Real Madrid, he will still be competing against established right-backs who have enjoyed steady minutes. With friendlies against Uruguay and Japan scheduled for late March, Tuchel’s squad selection is likely to prioritise players with consistent match fitness and recent competitive action, both areas where Alexander-Arnold has lacked opportunity.

Summary

After months of interruption from injuries, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to competitive action for Real Madrid could not have come at a more pivotal time. As the season heads into its most critical stretch — with Champions League knockout games and a tight La Liga battle unfolding — his fitness and form could be decisive not just for Madrid’s ambitions, but also for his own future at club and international level.
