Chelsea in talks to sign Sunderland’s Xhaka
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Sunderland have made it clear that midfielder Granit Xhaka is not available for transfer, despite growing interest from Chelsea, who have reportedly initiated discussions with the player’s representatives regarding a potential move.

The Swiss international, now 33 years old, remains under contract with Sunderland until 2028 and was instrumental in the club’s successful campaign last season. His leadership, consistency, and experience played a major role in helping the Black Cats secure qualification for European competition, marking a significant achievement for the club.

Although reports suggest that Chelsea have made contact with Xhaka’s camp, sources within Sunderland have not confirmed any formal approach. Nevertheless, it is understood that the player himself would be open to the idea of reuniting with former manager Xabi Alonso, who is currently linked with Chelsea. The pair enjoyed success together at Bayer Leverkusen, where they won the Bundesliga title in 2024.

Despite this potential connection, no agreement has been reached between Chelsea and Xhaka regarding personal terms. Discussions appear to be at an early stage, and Sunderland’s firm stance on retaining the player presents a major obstacle to any deal progressing further.

Sunderland’s strong position in this situation is reinforced by their financial stability. Having secured a place in the Europa League at Chelsea’s expense on the final day of last season, the club is not under pressure to sell key players. Internal sources have emphasized that there is no intention to part ways with Xhaka, who is considered a central figure within the squad.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been a vital presence both on and off the pitch. During the previous campaign, he missed only four league matches and consistently delivered high-level performances. As captain under manager Regis Le Bris, Xhaka provided leadership that was widely praised, helping guide the team to a seventh-place finish and European qualification.

For Chelsea, pursuing Xhaka would represent a notable shift in their recent transfer strategy. Over the past two seasons, the club has focused heavily on signing younger players, fielding the youngest squad in the Premier League. During this period, they have not included any players aged 30 or above in their matchday selections.

However, there is growing recognition within Chelsea’s leadership that adjustments may be necessary. Figures such as co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali are believed to acknowledge that the current recruitment approach may need to evolve in order to achieve better results.

Criticism of Chelsea’s squad has often centered on a perceived lack of experienced leadership and concerns about dressing-room dynamics. These are areas where Xhaka’s influence could prove valuable. His reputation as a strong leader was evident during his time at Arsenal and has been further reinforced by his impact at Sunderland.

Chelsea’s interest in strengthening their midfield has been evident throughout the transfer window. This need could become even more pressing amid increasing speculation surrounding the future of Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder has been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid, although no official offer has been made.

Chelsea are believed to value Fernandez at approximately £120 million, reflecting his importance to the team. Reports from Spain indicate that there is internal support within Real Madrid for pursuing the player, with both club president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho reportedly in favor of the move.

In addition to their midfield considerations, Chelsea are also active in other areas of the squad. The club is expected to complete the signing of Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra as part of their ongoing efforts to strengthen the team.

At the same time, several players face uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge. Names such as Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Malo Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo have all been mentioned as potential departures or players whose roles may change.

Defender Marc Cucurella has already completed a move to Real Madrid, further highlighting the scale of potential changes within the squad.

While Chelsea continue to explore their options, Sunderland remain resolute in their position regarding Xhaka. The club views him as an essential component of their plans moving forward, particularly as they prepare to compete in European competition.

Xhaka’s experience, leadership, and ability to perform at a high level make him a valuable asset, and losing him would represent a significant setback for Sunderland. As a result, any potential suitor would face a considerable challenge in attempting to secure his transfer.

For now, the situation remains unresolved, with Chelsea’s interest yet to develop into a formal bid. Sunderland’s determination to retain their captain suggests that Xhaka is likely to remain at the club, at least for the foreseeable future.

As the transfer window progresses, attention will remain on whether Chelsea decide to pursue the move more aggressively or shift their focus to alternative targets. Meanwhile, Sunderland will continue to build on their recent success, with Xhaka expected to play a central role in their ambitions both domestically and in Europe.
