Mexico rampant at fortress Azteca – and England could be next

“We have a chance to achieve something extraordinary.”

That sense of belief and ambition is spreading rapidly among Mexico supporters after their national team delivered a commanding performance to defeat Ecuador and advance to the last 16 of the World Cup. While the celebrations were still ongoing, many fans had already begun looking ahead to what could be an even bigger challenge.

England are set to face DR Congo in their round-of-32 clash, a fixture that will test their strength and composure. However, should they come through that match successfully, an even tougher obstacle may await them in the next round.

A potential showdown with Mexico at the legendary Azteca Stadium looms on the horizon—a fixture that excites neutral fans but could present a daunting challenge for England. Playing in such an iconic venue, backed by passionate home support, would add an entirely different dimension to the contest.

Historically, Mexico have struggled to progress deep into World Cups, never advancing beyond the quarter-finals. Yet their performances in this tournament suggest a team transformed. With four matches played, they have maintained a perfect record—four wins, eight goals scored, and, perhaps most impressively, none conceded.

This level of dominance has ignited hope among their supporters, who are beginning to dream of achieving something unprecedented. Even when acknowledging England’s strength, Mexican fans remain optimistic.

One supporter highlighted the quality within the England squad, mentioning stars such as Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham. Despite recognizing the threat posed by such talent, the fan emphasized that Mexico’s momentum could make the seemingly impossible a reality.

Their confidence is not without foundation. Mexico’s record at the Azteca Stadium is formidable, making it one of the most intimidating venues in international football. Out of 89 competitive matches played there, Mexico have won 70, drawn 17, and lost only twice. Furthermore, they are unbeaten in their last 10 World Cup games at this stadium.

Although some may argue that the level of opposition at the Azteca has varied, the statistics still underline the difficulty any visiting team faces when playing there. The combination of altitude, atmosphere, and national pride creates a unique challenge.

Former Australia and Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou described the potential scenario as stepping into a completely different World Cup. According to him, the intensity of the environment and the support for the home team would make it an entirely new experience for England.

Mexico’s victory over Ecuador was set against a dramatic backdrop. Thunderstorms and lightning delayed the start of the match by an hour, creating an atmosphere charged with anticipation. Once the game began, Mexico wasted no time asserting their dominance.

Julian Quinones opened the scoring with a powerful and precise strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance. Raul Jimenez then doubled the lead, ensuring that the outcome was effectively decided before halftime.

The final whistle sparked scenes of celebration not only across Mexico but also in cities around the world with large Mexican communities. In Los Angeles, for example, thousands gathered for watch parties, and the victory was celebrated with fireworks and jubilant gatherings.

Fans expressed their excitement and pride in the team’s performances. Many described this as one of the strongest Mexican sides in recent memory, with some admitting that even topping their group had seemed unlikely before the tournament began.

Another supporter spoke about the noticeable growth in the team’s confidence and cohesion. Players who had previously been criticized for mistakes are now delivering outstanding performances, contributing to a strong sense of unity within the squad.

For England or DR Congo, the challenge of facing Mexico extends beyond the intimidating venue. The team itself is packed with talent and in excellent form.

Raul Jimenez, well known to Premier League fans, has been a key figure in the attack. Meanwhile, Julian Quinones has emerged as one of the standout players of the tournament. The 29-year-old forward, currently playing in Saudi Arabia, scored a brilliant goal against Ecuador and has now netted three times in four matches.

Mexico also boast one of the most exciting young talents in the competition. Gilberto Mora, just 17 years old, has already made history by becoming one of the youngest players ever to start a World Cup knockout match. His composure and skill at such a young age highlight the depth of talent within the squad.

Defensively, Mexico have been equally impressive. Across four matches, they have conceded very few chances, with only six shots on target faced. Their disciplined and organized approach has made them extremely difficult to break down.

Former Nigeria striker Efan Ekoku praised the team’s qualities, describing them as disciplined, skillful, and relentless. He emphasized that a home side performing at this level is incredibly hard to stop, predicting that they will pose a significant challenge in the knockout stages.

For Mexico, reaching this stage of the tournament carries additional significance. The phrase “quinto partido,” meaning “fifth game,” has long symbolized a barrier they have struggled to overcome. Despite hosting the World Cup in 1970 and 1986 and reaching the quarter-finals on those occasions, they have consistently been eliminated in the round of 16 in subsequent tournaments.

This time, however, they have broken that pattern by securing their place in the fifth match. This achievement alone has lifted expectations, and fans are beginning to believe that this could be the year their team finally goes all the way.

If Mexico can win their next match and progress further, the sense of belief will only grow stronger. Their current form, combined with the advantage of playing at the Azteca Stadium, makes them one of the most intriguing teams in the competition.

As the World Cup continues, the possibility of a clash between England and Mexico adds an extra layer of excitement. For England, it would represent a stern test of their ambitions. For Mexico, it could be the opportunity to prove that their dreams of glory are not just wishful thinking, but a genuine possibility.
