Novak Djokovic withdraws from the Rogers Cup saying he needs rest after Wimbledon win

Novak Djokovic, the world rank no. 1 has announced that he will not be participating in this year’s Rogers Cup in Montreal as he needs to get more rest after his big Wimbledon win.

Djokovic, in a final of the Wimbledon against Roger Federer, won his career’s 16th Grand Slam title. Their match was recorded to be the longest in the history of Wimbledon.

The 4 times winner of the Rogers Cup, Novak Djokovic participated and won the last Rogers Cup which is a an event that rotates in between Montreal and Toronto. He has joined Federer who also skipped this asters 1000 event.

Djokovic, who looks forward to the US Open next month said, “I am sorry to announce but I am withdrawing from the Rogers Cup this year. I decided with the support of my team that my body needs further rest ad recovery before I come back to court again for playing. I love Canada and there are many friends of mine in Canada who make me feel like I am at home.  I look forward to coming back again next year to play in front of you in Montreal.”

Juan Martin del Porto also has been ruled out as the Argentinean player is still in rehab for his right kneecap fracture which he sustained back during the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen’s Club.

With Djokovic not participating, the world no. 2 Rafael Nadal will be the top-seeded player in the tournament which will start on 5th of August.
