Petra Kvitova suffered an arm injury that has forced her to withdraw from the upcoming Rogers Cup which now makes Serena Williams one of the top 8 seeds of the tournament.
Earlier in the weekend, Kvitova announced the news about her withdrawal from the tournament on social media. She said that she won’t be able to make her trip to Canada where the tournament shortly began on Saturday.
She said, “My forearm injury is progressing which has caused me some problems. On the advice of the medical team, I am making the decision to withdraw from the Rogers Cup and will not be making a trip to Canada.”
2-time Wimbledon Champion was hoping to capitalize on the high of winning the title back in 2012 but her injuries require more time for her to recover.
With Kvitova’s withdrawal, Serena Williams has become on the top 8 seeds of the tournament and will play her match on Wednesday next week.
Williams has won the tournament here three times in the past when she took the title home back in 2001, 2011 and 2013. As for her older sister, Venus Williams she will take a spot in the main draw.
In the 2018’s final of the Rogers Cup, Simona Halep defeated Sloane Stephens by 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-2.
The Romanian tennis star is the 4th seed for this upcoming tournament.
The no. 1 seed spot went to world rank no. 1 Ashleigh Barty ho made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament last year and also enjoyed the success of winning the doubles draw alongside Demi Schuurs.
The 2nd seed is Naomi Osaka while the 3rd seed is Karolina Pliskova.
The main draw also has Britain’s two WTA players like Kiki Bertens and Johanna Konta while the wildcard spots have been given to Maria Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard.
