Benfica’s Prestianni gets provisional one-match ban

European football has once again been drawn into a serious disciplinary controversy after Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was handed a provisional one-match suspension following allegations of racist abuse reported by Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr during their recent Champions League clash.

The temporary ban, issued by UEFA, means the young Argentine is currently set to miss the decisive second leg of the tie in Madrid. However, the suspension is not a final verdict. It has been imposed on an interim basis while a full ethics and disciplinary investigation is ongoing, leaving the possibility open for further sanctions depending on the outcome of the inquiry.

The incident reportedly occurred during the first leg of the knockout phase play-off match held in Lisbon last week. According to match accounts, Vinicius informed French referee Francois Letexier that he had been subjected to racist language by Prestianni during the second half of the game. The situation escalated quickly, prompting a brief stoppage that lasted around 10 minutes, as the Brazilian forward and his teammates temporarily left the pitch while officials addressed the complaint.

Prestianni has strongly rejected the accusation, maintaining that he did not engage in any racist conduct. Benfica have also publicly supported their player’s stance, announcing their intention to appeal the provisional suspension despite acknowledging that the timing of the disciplinary process makes it unlikely the decision will be overturned before the second leg. The Portuguese club expressed disappointment at losing the player while the investigation is still incomplete, arguing that the case has not yet reached a definitive conclusion.

The controversial match itself was already emotionally charged before the alleged incident took place. Vinicius had scored a remarkable goal earlier in the game and later received a yellow card for his celebratory actions in front of the Benfica supporters. Tensions rose further after the goal celebration, which some interpreted as provocative, though no official wrongdoing was attached to that moment beyond the booking.

Adding to the drama surrounding the fixture, Benfica manager Jose Mourinho also found himself at the centre of post-match criticism. He questioned Vinicius’ conduct after the match, suggesting that the celebrations were disrespectful toward the home crowd. Mourinho’s own situation has complicated matters, as he is serving a suspension after being sent off later in the same game. As a result, he will not be present for pre-match media duties ahead of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, with assistant coach Joao Tralhao stepping in instead.

UEFA justified the provisional ban by stating that the ethics and disciplinary inspector identified a “prima facie violation,” meaning there was sufficient preliminary evidence to support the allegation at an initial level. Importantly, the governing body clarified that the interim punishment does not prejudge the final ruling. The case will continue to be examined thoroughly before any long-term disciplinary action is confirmed or dismissed.

This rapid intervention highlights UEFA’s approach to allegations involving discriminatory behaviour, especially in high-profile competitions. Governing bodies in European football have faced increasing pressure in recent years to act swiftly and decisively when accusations of racism arise, particularly when they involve globally recognised players and widely televised matches. The speed of this decision — coming just days after the match — suggests an intent to show zero tolerance toward potential discrimination while still preserving due process through a formal investigation.

Benfica, in their official response, reiterated their commitment to fighting racism and all forms of discrimination. The club emphasized that inclusion and equality are core values embedded in its historical identity, pointing to the legacy of legendary figures such as Eusebio and the social work conducted through the Benfica Foundation. Despite disagreeing with the timing of the suspension, the club made it clear that it condemns any form of racist behaviour and supports the broader fight against discrimination in football.

From a procedural standpoint, UEFA’s decision is not unprecedented. In past cases involving similar allegations, interim suspensions have been applied when governing bodies believed immediate action was necessary due to the seriousness of the claims and the proximity of upcoming fixtures. A notable example occurred in 2021 when Slavia Prague’s Ondrej Kudela was provisionally suspended following accusations of racist abuse against Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara during a Europa League match. That case ultimately resulted in a lengthy ban after the investigation concluded.

Observers believe UEFA may have felt compelled to act quickly this time because the second leg of the tie is scheduled just a week after the first match. Waiting for a full investigation could have allowed a potentially controversial player to participate in a crucial fixture while serious allegations remained unresolved. By issuing a provisional ban, UEFA has attempted to balance urgency with fairness, ensuring the integrity of the competition while the disciplinary process continues.

The broader context surrounding Vinicius Jr also adds weight to the situation. The Real Madrid forward has been the victim of racist abuse on multiple occasions in recent seasons, particularly in Spanish football, making any new allegation involving him especially sensitive. His decision to report the incident directly to the referee reflects an increasing willingness among players to confront discrimination immediately rather than remain silent.

Meanwhile, the upcoming second leg in Madrid now carries even greater significance. With Prestianni currently suspended and Mourinho absent from the touchline due to his own disciplinary sanction, Benfica will face both sporting and psychological challenges heading into the decisive encounter. The absence of a key winger could influence tactical planning, while the controversy itself may affect team focus and public perception.

UEFA’s disciplinary bodies will now gather further evidence, including referee reports, player testimonies, video footage, and any available audio analysis. Only after this comprehensive review will a final verdict be issued. Should the allegations be proven, the punishment could extend beyond the provisional one-match ban and include a longer suspension. Conversely, if insufficient evidence is found, the interim sanction could be overturned and the player cleared of wrongdoing.

For now, the case remains unresolved, and the football world is closely watching how UEFA handles the investigation. The outcome will not only impact the individuals directly involved but may also set another precedent for how European football authorities respond to allegations of discriminatory behaviour in elite competitions.
