Sacking Amorim could cost Man Utd nearly £16m

Manchester United have confirmed that the decision to dismiss Ruben Amorim could ultimately cost the club close to £16 million, adding another expensive chapter to their recent managerial upheavals. The financial details were disclosed in a formal filing to the New York Stock Exchange, offering a clearer picture of the true cost behind the Portuguese coach’s short-lived tenure at Old Trafford.

Amorim was officially relieved of his duties on 5 January, just one day after publicly criticizing the club’s hierarchy following a 1-1 draw against Leeds. His outspoken remarks reportedly strained already fragile relationships within the club’s leadership structure, accelerating a split that had been building behind the scenes. Although results had fluctuated during his time in charge, it was the breakdown in internal relations that ultimately sealed his fate.

According to the financial filing, United have written off an amortised fee of £6.3 million related to the original cost of bringing Amorim to the club from Sporting CP in November 2024. That amount formed part of the £11 million compensation package United paid to secure his services at the time. In addition, the club has made a provision of £15.9 million, representing the maximum potential liability owed to Amorim and his backroom staff following his dismissal.

While the official document does not explicitly detail what conditions would trigger the full £15.9 million payout, sources familiar with the situation suggest it is linked to clauses concerning future employment. If Amorim and his coaching team remain without new roles for a defined period, the club may be required to honor the full compensation terms.

This financial burden concludes what has proven to be a costly managerial experiment. United had already spent heavily to reshape their technical leadership structure in late 2024. Prior to Amorim’s appointment, the club parted ways with Erik ten Hag, whose departure itself cost £10.4 million. Combined with the £11 million paid to Sporting and the new compensation provision, the total expense surrounding the managerial transition reaches approximately £37.3 million.

Amorim’s time at Old Trafford lasted just 14 months, making it the shortest permanent managerial spell at United since David Moyes was dismissed eight months into his tenure in 2014. Despite early optimism about Amorim’s tactical philosophy and success in Portugal, his reign failed to deliver sustained improvement.

During his 63 matches in charge, Amorim recorded 25 victories. However, inconsistency plagued the campaign, and the team ultimately finished 15th in the Premier League — their worst top-flight finish since relegation in the 1973-74 season. That disappointing league performance was compounded by a defeat in the Europa League final, denying United a route back into European competition.

As a result, the club are without European football this season for only the second time since 1990, a significant setback both competitively and financially. The absence of continental fixtures impacts broadcasting revenue, sponsorship exposure, and the club’s global profile — areas that have become increasingly important in modern football economics.

Amorim’s final months also included a humiliating Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby, who triumphed on penalties in the second round. That shock defeat intensified scrutiny of the squad’s mentality and tactical direction under his leadership.

At the time of his dismissal, United were sitting sixth in the Premier League table. However, tensions behind the scenes reportedly escalated following a major disagreement with director of football Jason Wilcox in the days leading up to the Leeds fixture. The dispute is understood to have further destabilized the working relationship between the manager and the club’s executive structure.

Following Amorim’s departure, under-18s coach and former United midfielder Darren Fletcher briefly stepped in as interim manager for two matches. Shortly thereafter, Michael Carrick was appointed to oversee the team until the end of the season.

Carrick’s impact has been immediate and positive. The team has experienced a resurgence in form, winning five of his first six matches in charge, including a notable victory over Everton on Monday. That improvement has propelled United into fourth place in the league standings, placing them in a strong position to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

While the on-field recovery under Carrick offers optimism, the financial ramifications of Amorim’s dismissal underscore the broader challenges facing the club. In the same filing, United confirmed adjustments to their financial structure. They have increased the available credit in their revolving drawdown facility by £50 million, raising the total to £400 million. At the same time, they repaid £75 million, leaving an outstanding balance of £215 million.

These figures highlight the delicate balancing act between maintaining competitiveness and managing financial sustainability. Modern football clubs operate within increasingly complex economic frameworks, and managerial changes often carry significant hidden costs beyond simple compensation packages.

The filing also revealed that £600,000 worth of sponsorship services were provided to Ineos Automotive Ltd, a subsidiary of the Ineos group. Ineos is owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who holds a minority stake in Manchester United. While such commercial partnerships are common in football, the disclosure illustrates the interconnected nature of business dealings surrounding the club.

Despite the financial clarity offered by the filing, Amorim himself has yet to speak publicly about his tenure at Old Trafford. Sources close to the 41-year-old indicate there is no immediate plan for him to break his silence. His departure remains a sensitive topic, particularly given the circumstances surrounding his criticism of the club’s hierarchy.

Ultimately, Amorim’s spell at Manchester United will be remembered as a bold but unsuccessful gamble. His tactical ideas, which had flourished in Portugal, struggled to translate consistently to the Premier League environment. Internal tensions, inconsistent performances, and high-profile setbacks combined to bring his tenure to an abrupt end.

For United, the focus now shifts to stability. With improved league form under Carrick and renewed hope of Champions League qualification, the club appears determined to move forward swiftly. However, the financial consequences of recent managerial decisions serve as a reminder of the high stakes involved in elite football management.

As Manchester United aim to rebuild both competitively and structurally, the cost of Amorim’s dismissal stands as a stark example of how expensive short-term solutions can become in the long run.
