Usyk to defend title against kickboxer in Egypt

Oleksandr Usyk is set to make a dramatic return to the ring in May, defending his WBC heavyweight crown against former kickboxing superstar Rico Verhoeven in a spectacle staged at the iconic Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. The bout, scheduled for 23 May and branded “Glory in Giza,” promises to be one of the most visually stunning world-title events in modern boxing history.

The Ukrainian champion, a two-time undisputed heavyweight king, currently holds the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles. Usyk has not competed since his emphatic stoppage victory over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in July, a performance that reaffirmed his dominance in the division. Undefeated across 24 professional fights, Usyk remains one of boxing’s most technically gifted and disciplined operators.

Standing opposite him will be Rico Verhoeven, a 36-year-old Dutch heavyweight who reigned supreme in kickboxing for over a decade. Verhoeven amassed 76 bouts in his kickboxing career, winning 66 of them, and built a reputation as one of the sport’s most formidable champions. However, he has not boxed professionally since 2014, making this showdown an extraordinary leap into unfamiliar territory.

Usyk expressed admiration for Verhoeven’s achievements but made it clear that boxing is a vastly different arena. He acknowledged the Dutchman’s accomplishments at the highest level of kickboxing, referring to him as a powerful athlete and a true champion. Still, Usyk underlined that boxing has its own demands, its own rhythm, and its own rulers. Respect, he suggested, does not translate into leniency.

Verhoeven, for his part, framed the bout as the ultimate test. After spending 12 years as an undisputed heavyweight kickboxing champion, he announced his departure from the sport last November, seeking fresh challenges rather than comfort. According to Verhoeven, remaining at the top for such a prolonged period only intensified his competitive hunger. Facing the best in boxing, he believes, is the natural extension of that drive.

He views the clash as “undisputed versus undisputed”—a champion from one combat discipline daring to confront a master from another. It is an ambitious narrative, one that appeals to fans intrigued by crossover contests. Yet this is not an exhibition or novelty bout. It is a sanctioned world heavyweight title fight.

The setting adds another layer of intrigue. Hosting a championship fight beneath the shadow of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World evokes images of grandeur and spectacle. Few sporting backdrops can rival the Pyramids of Giza for sheer historical resonance. While logistical details remain limited, promoters have emphasized that the event will unfold under the “shadow of ancient giants,” blending modern sport with timeless architecture.

However, beyond the spectacle lies serious sporting debate. Many observers view the contest as a significant mismatch. Verhoeven’s accomplishments in kickboxing are undeniable, but transitioning to elite-level boxing—especially directly into a world-title bout against a pound-for-pound great—presents immense challenges. The differences between the sports are profound: stance, pacing, glove size, clinch rules, defensive techniques, and scoring criteria all demand adaptation.

Recent history has shown that crossover fights can produce surprises. When boxing debutant Francis Ngannou nearly toppled Tyson Fury in 2023, the heavyweight division was shaken. Ngannou’s knockdown of Fury proved that raw power and athleticism can disrupt even seasoned champions. That result serves as a reminder that unpredictability is embedded in combat sports.

Yet Usyk is widely regarded as one of the most cerebral fighters of his era. His footwork, ring IQ, defensive awareness, and ability to adjust mid-fight distinguish him from many heavyweights. Unlike Fury’s sometimes cavalier approach, Usyk’s methodical discipline suggests he is unlikely to underestimate an opponent—no matter their background.

Questions inevitably arise about the state of the heavyweight landscape. Critics argue that Usyk still has credible boxing challengers awaiting opportunities. He recently vacated his WBO title rather than pursue a mandatory defense, a decision that sparked discussion among fans eager for clashes with rising contenders. Names like Agit Kabayel have circulated among supporters who crave matchups between unbeaten, momentum-driven heavyweights.

Instead, the division’s reigning champion finds himself preparing for a crossover confrontation. Some see this as evidence of boxing’s evolving commercial priorities, where spectacle and global reach sometimes overshadow traditional matchmaking logic. In an era already defined by unconventional pairings—such as Anthony Joshua’s rumored bout with social media star Jake Paul—this event adds another chapter to boxing’s ongoing transformation.

From a promotional standpoint, the fight holds undeniable appeal. Verhoeven commands a substantial following from the kickboxing world, while Usyk’s status as undisputed champion ensures global boxing interest. The Egyptian setting broadens the sport’s geographical footprint, tapping into new markets and delivering a visually captivating broadcast product.

Still, at its core, the fight will hinge on technical realities. Verhoeven’s size, strength, and striking pedigree cannot be dismissed outright. Kickboxers often possess formidable conditioning and durability. However, boxing demands sustained rounds of tactical nuance—angles, feints, defensive slips, and combinations that differ markedly from kickboxing exchanges.

For Usyk, this bout may represent both opportunity and risk. A dominant victory would reinforce his aura and expand his brand internationally. A complacent performance, however, could invite scrutiny. The heavyweight division’s history is littered with cautionary tales of champions overlooking unconventional challengers.

Public reaction has ranged from excitement to skepticism. Some fans relish the crossover intrigue and dramatic location, while purists question the legitimacy of granting a world-title shot to a boxing novice. The phrase “how did we get here?” echoes across social media platforms.

Nevertheless, the fight is officially scheduled. On 23 May, beneath the gaze of ancient stone monuments that have stood for millennia, two combat champions from different worlds will collide. One brings a flawless boxing record and unified belts; the other carries the legacy of kickboxing dominance and the hunger of a challenger seeking validation in a new arena.

Whether this contest becomes a historic upset or a clinical demonstration of boxing mastery remains to be seen. But in terms of spectacle, symbolism, and storyline, “Glory in Giza” already commands attention.
