Bottom of the league, magic in the cup – Port Vale’s ‘incredible’ run

Port Vale Shock Sunderland to Reach Historic FA Cup Quarter-Final

It has been a frustrating and disappointing League One campaign for Port Vale, who currently sit at the bottom of the table and remain 11 points away from safety. Their league performances throughout the season have left fans worried about relegation, with victories proving extremely difficult to come by. However, while their league form has been poor, their performances in cup competitions have told a completely different and far more inspiring story.

On Sunday, Port Vale delivered one of the biggest shocks of the season by defeating Sunderland A.F.C. 1-0 in the FA Cup. The victory secured Vale a place in the quarter-finals of the competition for only the second time in their history, marking a remarkable achievement for the struggling League One club.

The result highlights a dramatic contrast between the club’s domestic league struggles and their impressive cup performances. In the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, Port Vale have managed to secure seven victories this season. By comparison, they have only managed six wins in their 32 League One matches so far.

Another interesting statistic further demonstrates the difference in their performances. Port Vale have scored the same number of goals in cup competitions as they have in their league matches this season, despite playing significantly fewer cup games. This shows how the team has managed to find a different level of confidence and determination when playing in knockout competitions.

Port Vale manager Jon Brady admitted after the game that he was still struggling to process the magnitude of the victory. Speaking shortly after the match, Brady said he was “still in shock” but praised his players for their commitment and effort.

He explained that the team had worked extremely hard and deserved recognition for their performances. Brady also expressed hope that the momentum created by their impressive cup run could help improve their league results in the coming weeks.

Although their overall league campaign has been disappointing, there have been some signs of improvement recently. Five of Port Vale’s six league victories this season have come during 2026, and four of those wins have been achieved since Brady took charge of the team in January.

Their victory over Sunderland was even more impressive because it came only a few days after another cup success. Earlier in the week, Port Vale defeated Bristol City F.C. in a fourth-round FA Cup match that had been rescheduled after originally being postponed in mid-February.

The win over Bristol City, who compete in the Championship, was already considered a major achievement. But defeating a Premier League side like Sunderland just days later made the week truly unforgettable for the club and its supporters.

Former Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. striker Glenn Murray, speaking as a pundit on Match of the Day, described the week as “terrific” for Port Vale. Murray praised the team’s determination and resilience, highlighting how they managed to overcome stronger opposition despite their league struggles.

He noted that beating Bristol City and Sunderland in the same week was a remarkable accomplishment and another memorable upset in what has already been an exciting FA Cup season.

The match-winning goal against Sunderland came from New Zealand striker Ben Waine, whose header proved to be the decisive moment of the match. The goal secured Port Vale’s place in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.

For Waine, the moment was particularly special because he grew up supporting Sunderland’s fierce rivals, Newcastle United F.C.. Scoring the goal that eliminated Sunderland from the FA Cup therefore made the achievement even more meaningful for the striker.

Despite the significance of the result, Waine admitted after the match that he had not initially realised just how far the team had progressed in the competition. Speaking to reporters, he revealed that he only discovered they had reached the quarter-finals after someone mentioned it to him following the match.

He described the feeling as “amazing” and said it was an unforgettable moment for him and his family.

Manager Brady also confessed that he had not fully kept track of the competition’s progress. He jokingly admitted that he had previously told his children the team was in the last 32 when they had actually already reached the last 16.

Nevertheless, Brady said it was a wonderful feeling to create history with the club and give supporters something to celebrate during an otherwise difficult season.

Port Vale’s win means they will be the lowest-ranked team remaining in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Another League One side, Mansfield Town F.C., had also been competing in the tournament but were eliminated by Arsenal F.C. on Saturday.

Despite their struggles in the league, Waine believes the team’s recent performances have given them renewed confidence. After what he described as a “tough old season,” he said the squad had started to come together and rediscover its belief.

According to Waine, the players have found a new level of motivation and determination over the past few weeks. He emphasized that the team is united and committed to fighting for each other as they attempt to turn their season around.

While Port Vale celebrated their historic victory, Sunderland were left frustrated by their performance. Despite selecting a strong lineup and making only two changes from the team that had defeated Leeds United F.C. earlier in the week, the Premier League side struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match.

Former Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid commented that the team “never really got going” during the game. Although they created more opportunities in the second half, they were unable to convert those chances into goals.

Reid explained that Sunderland had the quality to win the match but lacked the sharpness and creativity needed to break down Port Vale’s disciplined defence.

Murray also criticised Sunderland’s performance, describing the team as “wasteful” in front of goal. He suggested that they missed the presence of experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka, who would normally help control the tempo of the game and provide leadership in midfield.

According to Murray, Sunderland are used to playing against teams that attack them in the Premier League, allowing them to exploit space on counter-attacks. Against a defensive and well-organised League One side like Port Vale, however, they were forced to take control and create chances themselves, something they struggled to do effectively.

Port Vale, on the other hand, delivered an outstanding team performance. The players showed determination and resilience throughout the match, winning crucial tackles, headers, and second balls across the pitch.

Their disciplined defending prevented Sunderland from finding any real momentum, while their occasional attacking opportunities eventually led to Waine’s decisive header.

Reid praised the effort of every Port Vale player, stating that both the starting lineup and substitutes had been “absolutely incredible.” He highlighted the team’s work rate, organisation, and ability to seize their moment when the opportunity arrived.

For Port Vale supporters, the victory represents a rare highlight in what has otherwise been a difficult season. The club’s incredible FA Cup journey has provided hope, excitement, and unforgettable memories for fans who have endured months of disappointing league results.

Whether their cup success can inspire a turnaround in their league form remains to be seen. But for now, Port Vale have written another remarkable chapter in their history and will eagerly await their next FA Cup challenge.
