Chaotic Old Firm Clash Ends with Pitch Invasion After Celtic Knock Out Rangers

The dramatic Scottish Cup meeting between Celtic F.C. and Rangers F.C. will likely be remembered less for the football and more for the chaotic scenes that unfolded after the final whistle. What should have been a tense cup tie instead turned into a scrappy, frustrating contest followed by a troubling pitch invasion involving supporters from both sides at Ibrox Stadium.

The match itself was far from a classic. Over the course of 120 minutes, both teams struggled to produce quality football. The game was filled with misplaced passes, rushed clearances, constant fouls, and a general lack of attacking creativity. Instead of fluid football, the contest was dominated by long balls, aerial battles, and frantic defending.

Despite the poor quality of play, Celtic ultimately managed to progress to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. Remarkably, they achieved this despite registering only one shot during the entire match and failing to hit the target even once.

The contest eventually went to penalties after neither team could break the deadlock. Celtic survived thanks largely to Rangers’ inability to make their dominance count. The decisive moment came when Tomas Cvancara converted the winning penalty after Jack Butland had been unable to prevent the effort.

At that moment, many believed the drama had finally come to an end. Unfortunately, the events that followed proved otherwise.

Soon after the final kick was taken, large numbers of Celtic supporters rushed onto the pitch from the Broomloan Road stand. Around 7,500 Celtic fans had been allocated seats at Ibrox for this match, marking a return to the larger away-fan allocations that were common before 2018.

Initially, the invasion appeared to be celebratory. Fans ran onto the field dancing, cheering, and waving flags. However, their presence on the pitch quickly began to provoke reactions from Rangers supporters in nearby sections of the stadium.

A small group of Rangers fans from the Copland Stand initially attempted to move toward the pitch as tensions rose. Stadium stewards quickly pushed them back, preventing an immediate confrontation.

Meanwhile, Celtic supporters continued to flood onto the field, ignoring repeated pleas from club staff urging them to return to the stands. The situation grew increasingly tense as the celebrations began to antagonize the home supporters.

Eventually, the restraint among sections of the Rangers crowd broke. Larger numbers of Rangers fans surged toward the pitch from the Copland Road stand, with some appearing aggressive and confrontational. Several individuals were seen wearing face coverings as they moved toward the area where Celtic players and staff were gathered.

One particularly concerning moment occurred when a member of Celtic’s backroom staff appeared to be confronted by a supporter. Although the exact details of the incident remain unclear, security personnel and police officers quickly intervened, tackling the individual involved and removing him from the scene.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill later explained that the staff member had been attempting to prevent a potentially dangerous confrontation. According to O’Neill, the situation escalated quickly, which resulted in the staff member being pulled to the ground by security forces during the commotion.

Another alarming moment occurred when Rangers supporters approached Celtic defender Julian Araujo. It is not yet clear whether physical contact occurred, but the incident was serious enough to prompt O’Neill to escort the player away from the area.

For a brief period, there were fears that large groups of Rangers and Celtic fans could end up confronting each other directly on the pitch. Thankfully, security personnel managed to prevent such a clash from happening.

Even so, objects were thrown between sections of supporters. One flare was reportedly thrown from the Rangers end toward the Celtic supporters, and other items were later thrown in the opposite direction.

Watching the chaos unfold raised serious questions about the decision to increase the number of visiting supporters allowed inside Ibrox for the match. The return to large away-fan allocations had been seen as a step toward restoring traditional Old Firm atmospheres, but the events of this match may force authorities to reconsider that approach.

The Scottish Football Association has already confirmed that it will investigate the incidents that occurred both during and after the match. The governing body is expected to review available video footage to determine exactly what happened and whether disciplinary action should be taken.

Neither club issued an official statement immediately after the match, but both are expected to cooperate fully with the investigation.

There were also reports of a heated exchange between players in the stadium tunnel following the game. Observers noticed that Cvancara appeared to have blood on his jersey, raising further questions about whether a confrontation may have occurred out of sight of cameras.

While those matters remain under investigation, the football itself left much to be desired.

Many observers described the match as one of the worst Old Firm encounters in recent memory. Rather than showcasing skill and creativity, the game was dominated by physical battles and scrappy play.

Both clubs are currently under pressure in the Scottish Premiership, where Heart of Midlothian F.C. have emerged as strong title contenders. For Celtic and Rangers, the Scottish Cup had increasingly looked like their best opportunity to secure silverware this season.

For Rangers, that opportunity has now disappeared. Despite enjoying long spells of possession, they struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the match.

Their inability to break down Celtic’s defense was particularly frustrating given their relatively healthy squad. Meanwhile, Celtic were missing several key players due to injuries.

Among those unavailable were Callum McGregor, Kieran Tierney, Kelechi Iheanacho, Cameron Carter‑Vickers, Alistair Johnston, Arne Engels, and Jota. The absence of so many important players limited Celtic’s attacking threat throughout the match.

Rangers, by contrast, had strengthened their squad with several recent signings following significant investment from ownership. However, those new additions struggled to make an impact.

Danish international Andreas Skov Olsen, one of the club’s high-profile recruits, was largely anonymous throughout the game. His performances so far have failed to justify the expectations surrounding his arrival.

One moment summed up Rangers’ frustrating afternoon. A promising corner in the second half, delivered into a crowded penalty area, ended with the ball harmlessly cleared away without troubling the Celtic defense.

Throughout the match, Celtic’s defensive organization proved to be their greatest strength. The back line repeatedly blocked shots, cleared dangerous crosses, and maintained discipline under pressure.

Even so, the contest rarely produced moments of genuine quality. When Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez appeared to score during extra time, his celebrations were quickly cut short when it became clear the ball had struck his hand before entering the net.

After 120 minutes of largely uninspiring football, the match finally reached the penalty shootout. Rangers captain James Tavernier set the tone by striking the crossbar with his opening kick.

Later, Djeidi Gassama missed a crucial penalty for Rangers, firing his attempt over the crossbar. That miss allowed Cvancara to step forward and seal Celtic’s victory.

The winning kick sparked celebrations that quickly spiraled into the disorder that followed.

Long after the stadium had emptied, the sound of police sirens could still be heard across the area surrounding Ibrox. Authorities remained concerned that tensions could spill over beyond the stadium.

For many observers, the football itself may soon be forgotten. Instead, attention will focus on the troubling scenes after the match and the investigation that now follows.
