Northern Ireland Include Dan Ballard in World Cup Play-Off Squad Despite Injury Concerns

Northern Ireland’s squad for the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final in Italy has been named, with Sunderland defender Dan Ballard included despite a hamstring problem. The 26-year-old was forced to leave the pitch during Sunderland’s recent Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., raising concerns about his fitness ahead of the crucial tie.

Manager Michael O’Neill admitted that he does not yet know the full extent of Ballard’s injury but remains hopeful that the defender will be available. O’Neill acknowledged that there are multiple injury issues affecting the squad as he prepares for the play-off.

Key Returns Bolster Northern Ireland

Despite injury worries, Northern Ireland are boosted by the return of experienced players, including goalkeeper Pierce Charles and midfielder Shea Charles. Both have recovered from previous absences and are expected to provide leadership in the squad.

Midfielders Ali McCann of Preston and versatile defender Brodie Spencer of Oxford United are also back after missing the November qualifiers. Their presence adds depth and experience in key areas of the pitch.

Unfortunately, key defender Conor Bradley remains sidelined with a knee injury he sustained while playing for Liverpool in January. However, Northern Ireland have rewarded promising young talent, calling up 19-year-old Kieran Morrison, who has impressed for Liverpool’s under-23 side this season and has featured in domestic cup competitions for the senior team. Morrison, an underage international, provides further options in defence and on the wing.

Squad Adjustments

Several regular squad members have been left out due to injury or selection choices. Defenders Ryan Johnson and Jamal Lewis, the latter recovering from ankle surgery, have dropped out. Winger Ross McCausland and goalkeeper Luke Southwood are also absent from the squad.

The squad includes four goalkeepers: Charles, Bailey Peacock-Farrell (Blackpool, on loan from Birmingham City), Josh Clarke (Partick Thistle), and Conor Hazard (Plymouth Argyle), who has been recovering from injury. O’Neill emphasized that he expects every player to do their utmost to be fit and available for the tie.

Upcoming Fixtures

Northern Ireland will face Italy national football team in Bergamo on Thursday, 26 March. The winner will advance to the play-off final against either Wales national football team or Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team on 31 March.

The winner of the play-off will earn a spot in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.

Northern Ireland Squad Breakdown

Goalkeepers: Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Conor Hazard, Pierce Charles, Josh Clarke.
Defenders: Paddy McNair, Dan Ballard, Ciaron Brown, Trai Hume, Brodie Spencer, Eoin Toal, Ruairi McConville, Terry Devlin, Kieran Morrison.
Midfielders: George Saville, Ali McCann, Shea Charles, Isaac Price, Paul Smyth, Ethan Galbraith, Justin Devenny, Brad Lyons, Jamie Donley, Jamie McDonnell, Patrick Kelly.
Forwards: Josh Magennis, Dion Charles, Callum Marshall, Jamie Reid.

The squad includes a mix of experience and youth, providing depth across all positions to navigate the high-pressure play-offs.

Dan Ballard and Fitness Concerns

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris confirmed that Ballard was substituted in the loss to Brighton as a precaution. Although the injury is not considered severe, Northern Ireland fans remain concerned about whether the defender can participate in Italy.

O’Neill faces a critical situation, as only four squad members play in the Premier League regularly, and losing Ballard would remove one of the few top-flight defenders available for selection.

Kieran Morrison: Rising Star

Morrison, called up for the first time, has yet to make his Premier League debut but has been impressing for Liverpool’s under-23 team. He has also featured in the FA Cup and EFL Cup for the senior side, including an appearance in a high-profile EFL Cup tie against Crystal Palace in November.

This season, Morrison has scored 13 goals in 17 appearances for Liverpool’s under-21s, showcasing his potential and ability to step into the senior international setup if needed. O’Neill will be hoping Morrison’s form continues as the squad prepares for the critical World Cup play-offs.

Key Challenges Ahead

Northern Ireland manager O’Neill must manage several players with fitness concerns while preparing the team to face one of Europe’s top footballing nations. Ensuring that the squad’s key players remain healthy over the next ten days will be critical for Northern Ireland’s chances.

With limited top-flight experience and several players missing due to injury, the challenge of overcoming Italy in the semi-final is significant. O’Neill is relying on both experienced campaigners and promising youngsters to provide a balanced squad capable of competing on the big stage.

The manager emphasized that there is still enough time for players who missed weekend club matches to recover ahead of the tie. The squad will continue to monitor injuries closely in preparation for the crucial fixtures.
