The Australian Open final of the men’s singles held between Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem held in Melbourne ended with Novak Djokovic’s 8th title win.
The Serbian tennis star collected his 17th trophy of a Grand Slam tournament with his overall scores of 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena to deny Dominic Thiem his first run at the Grand Slam title.
With this win, Novak Djokovic has become the first tennis player of the Open era to have won the Grand Slam titles across the period of 3 decades with him, Federer and Nadal dominating the entire Major titles. These 3 Tennis Bigs have extended their major title wins to 13 major tournaments. With this, they have left Stan Wawrinka and Marat Safin to be the only other men to have won the Australian Open since Federer won his first title back in 2004.
Djokovic, who was handed the Australian open trophy by the winner of 2004’s winner Marat Safin, he said, “I would start by saying many congratulations to Dominic for having this amazing tournament. It was not meant to be your night but you were very close to winning it. You still have a lot of time in your career and I am really sure that you will get those trophies of Grand Slam; more than one.”
While Novak Djokovic was bidding to win his 17th Grand Slam title, Dominic Thiem also had complete confidence going into the final., his confidence came from the fact that he had beaten the Serb for 4 times in their last 5 meetings. Thiem tried his best to become the first man to be born in the 1990s to be able to win the title of a Grand Slam tournament.
After Thiem received his runner-up plate, he said, “I also would like to start by congratulating Novak; amazing achievement and also congratulations to all of your team. It is unreal as to what all of you guys are doing for all these years. You and those 2 other guys have brought tennis to a whole new level. I feel very proud and happy that I am able to compete in these times. Although I felt a little bit short today, I hope that I can get revenge soon.”
