Lewandowski misses out on World Cup – who else won’t be there?

Several of the world’s most recognizable football stars will not be part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place across Canada, United States, and Mexico. Among the most notable absentees is Robert Lewandowski, widely regarded as one of the finest strikers of his generation.

At 37 years old, the FC Barcelona forward has enjoyed a remarkable international and club career. With 89 goals for Poland national football team, Lewandowski has been the backbone of his national side for years. However, despite his experience and leadership, he could not guide Poland to qualification, as they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Sweden national football team in Stockholm during the play-off final.

This defeat may signal the end of Lewandowski’s appearances on the international stage in major tournaments. By the time the next World Cup arrives in 2030, he will be 41, making it unlikely that he will feature again at that level.

Lewandowski’s achievements at club level are extraordinary. He won multiple league titles, including two Bundesliga championships with Borussia Dortmund and eight consecutive titles with Bayern Munich. After moving to Barcelona, he continued his success by winning La Liga titles, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest strikers in modern football.

However, Lewandowski is not the only major name missing from the tournament. Several other elite players have also failed to qualify, highlighting the unpredictability and competitiveness of international football.

One such player is Gianluigi Donnarumma, currently playing for Manchester City. Donnarumma has been in excellent form, especially after his move from Paris Saint-Germain, where he played a key role in their Champions League success.

Despite his individual brilliance, Donnarumma will once again miss out on a World Cup after Italy national football team failed to qualify. Italy’s elimination came after a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team, marking their third consecutive absence from the competition. This is a shocking development for a nation that has historically been one of football’s most successful teams.

Another standout absentee is Serhou Guirassy, who has emerged as one of Europe’s most consistent goal scorers in recent seasons. Playing for Borussia Dortmund, Guirassy has scored 62 Bundesliga goals over the past three campaigns and was among the top scorers in the Champions League during the 2024–25 season.

Despite his impressive performances at club level, Guirassy will not be participating in the World Cup because Guinea national football team failed to progress beyond the early stages of African qualifying. Their campaign was underwhelming, as they finished fourth in their group with a mixture of wins and draws that ultimately proved insufficient.

Similarly, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will also miss out. The talented winger, now representing Paris Saint-Germain, has been one of the most exciting players in Europe. He played a crucial role in PSG’s Champions League triumph, even scoring in the final against Inter Milan.

Kvaratskhelia also earned recognition individually, finishing 12th in the Ballon d’Or rankings. However, his national team, Georgia national football team, endured a disappointing qualification campaign. Competing against strong teams like Spain national football team, Turkey national football team, and Bulgaria national football team, Georgia managed just one win, which left them far from qualification.

Another major absence is Victor Osimhen, who has been one of the most prolific strikers in recent years. After helping Napoli secure the Serie A title in 2023, he moved to Galatasaray, where he continued his impressive goal-scoring form.

Osimhen scored 26 goals across club and international competitions this season. However, his national team, Nigeria national football team, fell short in qualification. They narrowly missed out in the group stage, finishing just behind South Africa national football team. Although they had another opportunity through the play-offs, Nigeria lost on penalties to DR Congo national football team, sealing their fate.

Midfield talent Dominik Szoboszlai is another high-profile player who will not feature in the World Cup. The Liverpool FC star has impressed with his performances this season, scoring several memorable long-range goals and becoming a key figure for both club and country.

Despite his contributions, Hungary national football team failed to secure qualification. Their hopes were dashed in dramatic fashion when they surrendered a 2-1 lead in their final group match against the Republic of Ireland national football team. Ireland scored twice in stoppage time, snatching a place in the play-offs and eliminating Hungary from contention.

These absences highlight the unforgiving nature of World Cup qualification. Even the most talented players cannot guarantee success if their teams fail to perform collectively. Football remains a team sport, and individual brilliance often cannot compensate for broader weaknesses.

The 2026 World Cup will still feature many of the world’s best players, but the absence of stars like Lewandowski, Donnarumma, Osimhen, and others will undoubtedly be felt. Fans around the world will miss the opportunity to see these players compete on the biggest stage.

For some, like Lewandowski, this could mark the end of an era. His contributions to football, both internationally and at club level, have been immense. While he may not get another chance to shine at a World Cup, his legacy as one of the greatest strikers of his generation is already secure.

In conclusion, the failure of these players and their teams to qualify serves as a reminder of how competitive international football has become. Qualification is no longer guaranteed for traditional powers or star players, and every campaign presents new challenges and surprises. As the world looks forward to the 2026 tournament, it will do so without several of the game’s biggest names.
