Swiatek appoints former coach of Nadal and Raducanu

Iga Swiatek has made a strategic coaching change as she aims to rediscover her top form during the 2026 tennis season. The Polish star has brought in experienced Spanish coach Francisco Roig, known for his long-term collaboration with Rafael Nadal, in a bid to strengthen her performance ahead of the upcoming clay-court season.

Swiatek, currently ranked among the world’s top players, has faced a challenging start to the year. Despite her impressive track record, she has struggled to maintain consistency in major tournaments, prompting the decision to refresh her coaching setup.

A Season of Mixed Results

The 2026 campaign has not unfolded as smoothly as Swiatek would have hoped. She exited both the Australian Open and the Indian Wells at the quarter-final stage, results that fell short of expectations for a player of her caliber.

While reaching the latter stages of tournaments is still a strong achievement, Swiatek has set high standards for herself, particularly given her history of Grand Slam success. Her inability to progress further in these events highlighted the need for adjustments in her game.

Turning Focus to Clay-Court Strengths

Swiatek’s strengths are most evident on clay courts, where she has enjoyed significant success throughout her career. Four of her six Grand Slam titles have come at the French Open, making it her most dominant surface.

With the Paris tournament approaching, Swiatek has shifted her attention toward preparing for the clay season. The decision to bring in Francisco Roig reflects her intention to fine-tune her game and maximize her chances of success at Roland Garros.

Roig’s expertise, particularly his experience working with Nadal—widely regarded as one of the greatest clay-court players in history—makes him an ideal addition to Swiatek’s team during this critical period.

Announcing a New Partnership

Swiatek confirmed the new coaching arrangement through her social media channels, expressing excitement about the collaboration. Her announcement signaled a fresh start and a willingness to embrace change in pursuit of improvement.

The partnership represents a new chapter in her career, as she seeks to build on her previous successes while addressing areas that need refinement.

Roig’s Impressive Coaching Background

Francisco Roig brings a wealth of experience to Swiatek’s camp. He is best known for his 17-year association with Rafael Nadal, during which he played a key role in shaping one of the most successful careers in tennis history.

In addition to his work with Nadal, Roig has coached several other high-profile players, including Emma Raducanu, whom he worked with for several months between 2025 and 2026.

His coaching philosophy emphasizes practical, hands-on training methods. Rather than relying heavily on video analysis, Roig is known for identifying technical issues through direct observation and implementing targeted drills to address them.

This approach has been praised by players such as Feliciano Lopez, who highlighted Roig’s ability to design effective and specific training routines.

End of Partnership with Wim Fissette

Swiatek’s decision to work with Roig follows her split from Wim Fissette, who had been instrumental in some of her recent successes.

Under Fissette’s guidance, Swiatek achieved a major milestone by winning her first Wimbledon title. However, their partnership also experienced difficult moments, including early tournament exits and inconsistent performances.

Their collaboration came to an end after Swiatek’s surprising first-round defeat at the Miami Open earlier this year. The result served as a turning point, prompting her to reassess her approach.

Highs and Lows on the Court

Swiatek’s journey over the past year has been marked by both remarkable achievements and challenging setbacks. While her Wimbledon victory stands as a career highlight, she has also faced tough losses against top competitors.

One notable example was her quarter-final defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at the French Open, where she lost a set without winning a game—a rare occurrence for a player of her stature.

Such experiences underline the competitive nature of modern tennis, where even the best players must continually adapt and evolve to stay ahead.

Training at Nadal’s Academy

Swiatek has already begun working with Roig at Nadal’s renowned training facility in Manacor, Spain. The environment provides an ideal setting for focused preparation, particularly on clay courts.

Training at this academy allows Swiatek to benefit from world-class facilities and expertise, further enhancing her readiness for the challenges ahead.

The decision to train in Spain also aligns with her goal of maximizing her performance on clay, where conditions closely resemble those at Roland Garros.

Looking Ahead to Roland Garros

As the French Open approaches, Swiatek will be aiming to return to her dominant form and add another Grand Slam title to her collection. Her track record on clay makes her one of the favorites, but competition remains fierce.

Players like Aryna Sabalenka and other top-ranked competitors will pose significant challenges, ensuring that Swiatek must be at her very best to succeed.

The addition of Francisco Roig to her coaching team could prove to be a निर्ण decisive factor, providing new insights and strategies that help her regain consistency.

Conclusion

Iga Swiatek’s decision to partner with Francisco Roig highlights her determination to overcome recent struggles and return to peak performance. With the clay-court season underway, all eyes will be on her as she prepares for another campaign at Roland Garros.

By combining her natural talent with Roig’s extensive experience, Swiatek is positioning herself for a strong comeback. The coming months will reveal whether this new partnership can deliver the results she is seeking.
