Real Madrid beaten by Mallorca as Muriqi hits late winner

A dramatic and unexpected defeat dealt a serious blow to Real Madrid’s title ambitions as they slipped seven points behind league leaders Barcelona in the La Liga standings. The loss came at the hands of Mallorca, who secured a crucial victory thanks to a late goal from Vedat Muriqi.

The result not only boosted Mallorca’s chances of avoiding relegation but also significantly dented Real Madrid’s hopes of reclaiming the league title. With just eight matches remaining in the season, Barcelona now hold a commanding position at the top, making the path to glory increasingly difficult for their rivals.

The match began with Real Madrid showing attacking intent, creating several early opportunities to take control. Despite their dominance in possession and forward play, they were unable to break through Mallorca’s resilient defense. A standout performer for the home side was goalkeeper Leo Roman, whose impressive saves kept Real at bay throughout the game.

One of the most notable chances fell to Kylian Mbappe, who displayed his pace and skill by weaving past defenders before unleashing a powerful shot. However, Roman reacted quickly, extending his leg to deny what seemed like a certain goal. Mbappe continued to threaten, later attempting a curling effort toward the far corner, but once again, the Mallorca goalkeeper was equal to the task, pushing the ball away.

Young talent Arda Guler also came close with a low-driven strike, but Roman’s reflexes ensured that the score remained level. Despite their attacking pressure, Real Madrid’s inability to convert chances began to frustrate them, a theme that would ultimately define the match.

Against the run of play, Mallorca found the breakthrough just before halftime. In the 41st minute, Manu Morlanes capitalized on a well-delivered cross from Pablo Maffeo. Morlanes controlled the ball with composure before slotting it into the bottom corner, giving the hosts a surprising lead.

The goal shifted the momentum in Mallorca’s favor and added pressure on Real Madrid to respond. As the second half unfolded, the visitors pushed forward in search of an equalizer, increasing the intensity of their attacks. However, Mallorca remained disciplined, defending resolutely and looking for opportunities on the counterattack.

Real Madrid’s persistence eventually paid off in the 88th minute. From a corner delivered by Trent Alexander-Arnold, defender Eder Militao rose above the defense to head the ball into the net. The goal sparked hope among the visitors, who believed they had done enough to salvage a valuable point.

Yet, the drama was far from over. Just as Real Madrid seemed to regain control, Mallorca delivered a decisive blow in stoppage time. Vedat Muriqi, who had been a constant threat throughout the season, struck once again. His goal in the first minute of added time secured a memorable victory for the hosts and sent the home fans into celebration.

For Mallorca, the win was more than just three points. It lifted them two points clear of the relegation zone, providing a significant boost in their fight for survival. The players’ determination and resilience were evident, as they managed to overcome one of the league’s strongest teams.

On the other hand, the defeat left Real Madrid facing a difficult situation. Already trailing Barcelona by four points before the match, the gap widened to seven after Barcelona’s comeback victory against Atletico Madrid later in the evening. Managed by Hansi Flick, Barcelona demonstrated their own resilience, further strengthening their grip on the title race.

With only eight rounds remaining, Barcelona now appear firmly in control. For Real Madrid, the margin for error has all but disappeared. Every match from this point forward becomes crucial, and even a perfect run may not be enough if Barcelona maintain their form.

The defeat also highlighted recurring issues for Real Madrid. Despite creating numerous chances, their lack of clinical finishing proved costly. Additionally, moments of defensive vulnerability, particularly in high-pressure situations, continue to haunt the team.

This loss marked Real Madrid’s first defeat to Mallorca since February 2023, making it an even more significant setback. The players and coaching staff will need to regroup quickly, as the season enters its निर्णायक phase.

Looking ahead, Real Madrid have an opportunity to shift their focus to European competition. They are set to face Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. The match presents a chance to restore confidence and demonstrate their capabilities on the continental stage.

However, balancing domestic and European commitments will be a challenge. The team must address their inconsistencies and find a way to convert chances more effectively. Key players like Mbappe will need to step up, while the defense must remain focused until the final whistle.

For Mallorca, the victory serves as a reminder of what can be achieved with determination and teamwork. Their ability to capitalize on limited opportunities and maintain defensive discipline played a crucial role in their success. If they can replicate this performance in the remaining matches, they stand a strong chance of securing their place in La Liga for another season.

In contrast, Real Madrid’s title hopes now hang by a thread. While mathematically still possible, the odds are increasingly stacked against them. The team must not only win their remaining games but also hope for slip-ups from Barcelona.

Football often delivers moments of unpredictability, and this match was a perfect example. A late goal, a resilient underdog, and a title contender left stunned—these elements combined to create a memorable encounter that could have lasting implications for the season.

As the campaign approaches its conclusion, all eyes will be on whether Real Madrid can mount a comeback or if Barcelona will continue their march toward another league title. For now, Mallorca’s dramatic victory stands as one of the defining moments of the season.
