Haaland’s ‘old-school’ lesson for Liverpool as FA Cup record falls

A resurgent Erling Haaland has sent a powerful message across English football, signaling that Manchester City are ready to mount a serious push for a domestic treble. With decisive victories over Arsenal and Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s side are peaking at exactly the right moment in the season.

City’s recent performances have demonstrated not only quality but also a renewed sense of purpose. Their triumph over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final delivered a significant psychological blow to one of their closest rivals in the Premier League title race. That victory was followed by an emphatic 4-0 dismantling of Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals, reinforcing the idea that City are determined to end the campaign on a high.

Having already secured silverware this season at Wembley, City are set to return to the iconic venue for an FA Cup semi-final later this month. Their dominance in the competition has been remarkable. The victory over Liverpool marked their eighth consecutive appearance in the semi-finals, extending a record that highlights their consistency at the highest level.

In addition to that achievement, City have now won 18 straight home matches in the FA Cup, surpassing a record that had stood since the 19th century. Such statistics underline their dominance and make them strong favorites to reach yet another final. If they succeed, it would mark their fourth consecutive FA Cup final appearance—a testament to the club’s sustained excellence under Pep Guardiola.

Central to this success has been the return to form of Haaland. The Norwegian striker delivered a sensational performance against Liverpool, scoring a hat-trick that reminded everyone of his lethal abilities. It was his 12th hat-trick since joining Manchester City in 2022, the highest number among players in Europe’s top five leagues during that period.

Haaland’s goalscoring exploits have been extraordinary. Across club and international competitions this season, he has amassed 46 goals in just 50 appearances. His impact extends beyond Manchester City, as he has also played a crucial role in helping Norway qualify for the upcoming World Cup. With such form, he is poised to lead both club and country into a crucial phase of their campaigns.

Against Liverpool, Haaland showcased the full range of his abilities. He opened the scoring with a confident penalty, setting the tone for City’s dominance. His second goal was particularly impressive—a powerful header that demonstrated his aerial prowess and positioning. He completed his hat-trick with a composed finish into an open net, capitalizing on defensive lapses to seal the victory.

This performance was especially significant given his recent dip in form. Prior to the match, Haaland had scored just once in his previous seven games, raising questions about his consistency. However, his display against Liverpool silenced critics and reaffirmed his status as one of the world’s top strikers.

Assistant coach Pep Lijnders, who took charge in Guardiola’s absence due to a touchline ban, was full of praise for Haaland. He highlighted the striker’s work ethic and dedication in training, describing him as a relentless professional. Lijnders also singled out Haaland’s second goal as a moment of “old-school” brilliance, emphasizing the striker’s instinctive finishing ability.

Haaland’s performance also placed him in elite company. He became only the third Premier League player to score in four or more consecutive home games against Liverpool, joining the likes of Chris Sutton and Sergio Aguero. Such achievements further underline his importance to Manchester City’s success.

Beyond individual brilliance, Manchester City’s overall performance has been a reflection of their collective strength. Under Guardiola, the team has established itself as a dominant force in domestic competitions. Since his arrival nearly a decade ago, City have played 52 FA Cup matches, winning 44 and scoring an impressive 157 goals.

Their home form in the competition has been particularly formidable. The last team to defeat City at the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup was Middlesbrough over a decade ago. This consistency has made their home ground a fortress, giving them a significant advantage in knockout competitions.

As the season enters its निर्णative phase, Manchester City’s focus is clear. They remain in contention for multiple trophies and are determined to capitalize on their current momentum. Upcoming fixtures will play a crucial role in shaping their campaign. A trip to face Chelsea in the Premier League will test their ability to maintain consistency, while a highly anticipated clash against Arsenal could prove निर्णative in the title race.

Former midfielder Leon Osman believes that City’s confidence is growing with each performance. He noted that the team’s current form suggests they have not given up on their Premier League ambitions, despite facing strong competition. According to Osman, City’s belief and determination could be key factors in their pursuit of success.

The timing of Haaland’s return to form could not be more significant. As the season reaches its climax, having a striker in peak condition provides a major advantage. His ability to deliver in crucial moments makes him a central figure in City’s quest for silverware.

Moreover, Haaland’s resurgence reflects the team’s overall mentality. After a challenging period, both the player and the squad have demonstrated resilience and determination to bounce back. This ability to overcome setbacks is a hallmark of successful teams and could prove decisive in the final stretch of the season.

For Manchester City, the coming weeks will define their campaign. With multiple trophies within reach, they have the opportunity to achieve something truly special. However, maintaining focus and consistency will be essential, as the margin for error is minimal at this stage.

In conclusion, Manchester City’s recent performances have sent a clear warning to their rivals. With Haaland firing on all cylinders and the team operating at a high level, they are well-positioned to compete on multiple fronts. Whether they can complete a domestic treble remains to be seen, but their current form suggests they are more than capable of achieving that goal.
