Fernandes would win Ballon d’Or at Man City – Pogba
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Paul Pogba has sparked fresh debate in the football world by suggesting that Bruno Fernandes would be a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or if he were playing for a more dominant side such as Manchester City. The former Manchester United midfielder shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, offering insight into how environment and team success can shape individual recognition.

Pogba, who had two separate spells at Manchester United before leaving for Juventus in 2022, praised Fernandes as a “top player” but argued that the Portuguese star is not always given the credit he deserves. According to Pogba, the level of teammates and the overall success of a club play a significant role in determining whether a player is considered among the very best in the world.

Fernandes has been one of United’s most consistent performers since joining the club in January 2020 from Sporting CP. Over the years, he has become the heartbeat of the team, contributing with goals, assists, and leadership. This season, he continues to shine, recently providing his 18th assist in the Premier League for a goal scored by Matheus Cunha in a victory over Chelsea FC. With just two more assists needed, Fernandes is closing in on the all-time Premier League record of 20, currently held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Despite these impressive statistics, Pogba believes Fernandes’ individual brilliance is somewhat overshadowed by Manchester United’s inconsistent performances in recent years. He argued that if Fernandes were placed in a more stable and successful system—like that of Manchester City—his contributions would be amplified, and he would be firmly in contention for football’s most prestigious individual prize.

Speaking candidly, Pogba stated that Fernandes could easily rank among the top three players in the world if he were part of a team that consistently wins trophies and dominates competitions. He emphasized that talent alone is often not enough; players need collective success to gain widespread recognition. In modern football, the Ballon d’Or is frequently awarded to players who not only perform exceptionally but also lead their teams to major titles.

Fernandes’ influence on the pitch is undeniable. Known for his work rate, intelligence, and versatility, he is capable of impacting every phase of the game. Pogba highlighted these qualities, noting how Fernandes covers large areas of the pitch, contributes defensively, and creates scoring opportunities. His ability to play quick passes, take shots from distance, and maintain high intensity makes him one of the most complete midfielders in the game.

Off the pitch, Fernandes has also earned praise for his leadership. As captain of Manchester United, he has been credited with driving standards within the squad and pushing his teammates to perform at a higher level. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens recently described him as an example for others, acknowledging his role in maintaining discipline and motivation in the dressing room.

However, Pogba pointed out that without major trophies, even the best players can struggle to gain recognition. “When you don’t win, people don’t think about you,” he explained, highlighting a harsh reality of elite football. Individual brilliance often goes unnoticed if it is not accompanied by team success.

Fernandes’ journey at Manchester United has been remarkable. Since his arrival for a reported £47 million, he has made over 300 appearances and scored more than 100 goals—a significant achievement for a midfielder. His consistency and durability have made him one of the club’s most reliable players during a period of transition.

Last summer, Fernandes reportedly turned down lucrative offers from clubs in the Saudi Pro League, including Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, choosing instead to remain at Old Trafford. His decision reflected his commitment to the club and his desire to achieve success in European football. His current contract runs until 2027, with the option of an additional year.

Meanwhile, Manchester United find themselves in a competitive position in the Premier League table, sitting third and level on points with Aston Villa. While this represents progress, the club still faces challenges in closing the gap with the league’s top teams.

Pogba also used the opportunity to discuss young talent at United, particularly Kobbie Mainoo. The 21-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of the club’s brightest prospects, earning his debut in 2023 and receiving his first call-up to the England National Team a year later.

Drawing from his own experience, Pogba expressed empathy for Mainoo’s situation. As a young player once struggling for opportunities under Sir Alex Ferguson, Pogba understands the importance of feeling valued and supported. He acknowledged that Mainoo faces a crucial decision regarding his future, especially after reportedly requesting a loan move to Napoli, which was ultimately denied.

Under the guidance of Michael Carrick, Mainoo has returned to the team and shown promising signs of development. Pogba believes the young midfielder has the potential to build a successful career at Manchester United but emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with the manager.

Reflecting on his own career, Pogba admitted that leaving United as a young player was a difficult decision, but one that ultimately helped him grow. He refrained from advising Mainoo directly, instead expressing hope that the youngster continues to play and develop, regardless of the path he chooses.

Pogba also looked back on his high-profile return to Manchester United in 2016, when he became the world’s most expensive player with an £89 million transfer from Juventus. He noted that the club had changed significantly since his initial departure, particularly in terms of culture and atmosphere.

Following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United underwent a period of transition. By the time Pogba returned, the team was under the management of Jose Mourinho, and the environment felt different. Pogba described changes not only in the playing style but also in the overall culture of the club, suggesting that it lacked the identity he had experienced earlier in his career.

During his second spell at United, Pogba achieved success by winning the UEFA Europa League and the EFL Cup. However, he acknowledged that the club’s overall direction and consistency were not the same as before.

After leaving Juventus, Pogba recently signed with AS Monaco and made his long-awaited return to football following a reduced suspension related to a doping case. Having been away from the game for an extended period, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play again.

Pogba revealed that his perspective on football has changed significantly. He now approaches the game with a renewed sense of appreciation and enjoyment, focusing on making the most of every moment on the pitch. His journey, filled with challenges and comebacks, has given him a deeper understanding of the sport and its importance in his life.

In conclusion, Pogba’s comments about Bruno Fernandes highlight an ongoing debate in football: the balance between individual talent and team success. While Fernandes continues to deliver outstanding performances, his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or may depend on Manchester United’s ability to compete for and win major trophies. As the season progresses, both Fernandes and United will aim to prove that they can rise to the challenge and achieve the success needed to gain global recognition.
