Arsenal ‘on a mission’ – is another special season on the horizon?

As Arsenal reflect on their 2025–26 campaign, the closing days of April could prove to be a defining period that shaped their entire season. Within the space of just 24 hours, the club experienced a dramatic shift in momentum across both domestic and European competitions, breathing new life into their ambitions.

The sequence began when Manchester City suffered a defeat to Brighton, offering Arsenal a valuable opportunity to remain in contention in the Women’s Super League title race. Capitalizing on that lifeline, the Gunners followed up with a crucial 2-1 comeback victory over Lyon in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium.

With just one more match standing between them and a place in the final for the second consecutive year, Arsenal now find themselves on the brink of something special. The result against Lyon not only gives them a narrow advantage heading into the second leg in France but also reinforces the belief that they can compete at the very highest level.

Captain Leah Williamson acknowledged that the team had to overcome early difficulties to secure the win. She admitted responsibility for Lyon’s opening goal, explaining that she allowed Jule Brand too much space, which ultimately led to the breakthrough. Despite that setback, Williamson praised the team’s resilience and highlighted the transformation in their performance after halftime.

According to Williamson, the second half showcased a team driven by purpose and determination, energized by the support of a passionate home crowd. The 26,758 fans in attendance played a significant role in lifting the players, creating an atmosphere that fueled Arsenal’s comeback.

The match itself reflected the broader narrative of Arsenal’s season. In the first half, they showed flashes of promise but lacked consistency and precision. Small errors and missed opportunities prevented them from fully asserting control, allowing Lyon to take advantage and go ahead.

However, the team that emerged after the break looked completely different. Much like their resurgence following the winter period earlier in the season, Arsenal appeared revitalized and full of energy. Their approach became more aggressive, with a high pressing game that disrupted Lyon’s rhythm and forced mistakes.

Manager Renee Slegers revealed that adjustments made at halftime were crucial. She emphasized the need for increased aggression in pressing and credited the players for executing the tactical changes with conviction. The improved intensity allowed Arsenal to dominate the second half and put Lyon under sustained pressure.

The impact of this pressing strategy was evident in the way Lyon struggled to cope. Despite boasting a squad filled with world-class talent, the French side found it difficult to create meaningful chances. Arsenal’s defensive organization ensured that goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar was rarely tested, a testament to the team’s overall discipline and cohesion.

Former England defender Anita Asante praised Arsenal’s performance, describing their second-half display as worthy of European champions. She noted that the team effectively neutralized Lyon’s attacking threats and deserved the victory, particularly given their previous struggles against the French giants.

Asante also highlighted the significance of the result, as it marked Arsenal’s first win over Lyon in London. She credited Slegers for her tactical acumen and ability to guide the team through a challenging match, adding that other teams should now be wary of facing Arsenal in this form.

The goals that secured Arsenal’s victory came as a direct result of their relentless pressure. While Lyon’s defensive errors played a role, those mistakes were largely forced by Arsenal’s aggressive approach. The first goal came when Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler misjudged a bouncing ball under pressure from Stina Blackstenius, leading to an own goal by Ingrid Engen.

The winning goal arrived late in the match and showcased Arsenal’s persistence. Engen hesitated while dealing with a pass, allowing Olivia Smith to capitalize. The forward won the race to the ball and, following a collision between Engen and Endler, was left with a simple finish into an empty net.

Although some may view these goals as fortunate, Slegers dismissed that notion. She argued that such moments are often the result of deliberate tactics and hard work. By applying constant pressure and targeting specific weaknesses, Arsenal created the conditions for those errors to occur.

Set-pieces also played an important role in Arsenal’s strategy. The team utilized low, driven deliveries designed to create confusion in Lyon’s defense, particularly given the physical strengths of their opponents. These carefully planned routines demonstrated the level of preparation and attention to detail within the squad.

Momentum now appears to be firmly on Arsenal’s side. In addition to their European success, they have an opportunity to close the gap in the domestic title race. A victory against Leicester City would bring them within striking distance of Manchester City, especially considering they have games in hand.

Slegers acknowledged the importance of maintaining pressure on City, expressing her desire to keep the title race alive for as long as possible. With a demanding schedule ahead, the team must balance their commitments in both competitions while sustaining their current level of performance.

Forward Alessia Russo emphasized the significance of momentum, noting that the team’s second-half display against Lyon could serve as a foundation for upcoming matches. She highlighted the role of fine margins in football, explaining that success often depends on making the most of key moments.

Russo also pointed out that goals can come in many forms, and what matters most is the ability to capitalize on opportunities. Arsenal’s willingness to press aggressively and seize mistakes has proven to be an effective approach, particularly in high-stakes matches.

The broader lesson from Arsenal’s recent performances is that success is rarely a matter of luck alone. While certain moments may appear fortunate, they are often the result of sustained effort, tactical discipline, and a clear game plan. By consistently applying pressure and maintaining focus, teams can create their own opportunities.

As the season approaches its conclusion, Arsenal find themselves in a strong position to achieve their goals. Whether in the Champions League or the domestic league, they have demonstrated the resilience and quality needed to compete at the highest level.

In many ways, this period encapsulates the essence of their campaign—a journey marked by challenges, growth, and moments of brilliance. If they can maintain their current trajectory, the final weeks of the season could deliver a memorable and potentially historic outcome.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s ability to respond to adversity and seize opportunities has defined their season. With momentum on their side and belief growing within the squad, they are well-positioned to pursue both domestic and European success.
