Man City set to replace Guardiola with Maresca

Enzo Maresca is reportedly on course to become the next manager of Manchester City, with the Italian coach expected to succeed Pep Guardiola ahead of the 2026–27 season. The anticipated transition marks the end of a historic era at the Etihad Stadium and the beginning of a new chapter for one of Europe’s most dominant clubs.

As widely reported, Guardiola is preparing to step down following City’s final match of the current campaign against Aston Villa. His departure has been planned internally for several months, giving the club’s hierarchy ample time to evaluate potential successors. Among the candidates considered, Maresca has emerged as the standout choice, with negotiations between both parties already at an advanced stage.

The 46-year-old Italian is understood to be highly interested in the role and keen to return to Manchester City, a club where he previously built strong ties. His appointment is expected to be confirmed in due course, barring any unexpected developments. City’s leadership views him as a natural successor, largely due to his familiarity with the club’s philosophy and playing style.

Maresca’s managerial credentials have grown significantly over the past few years. During his time at Chelsea, he enjoyed a highly productive spell, winning both the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League, while also guiding the team to qualification for the UEFA Champions League. These achievements came during his only full season in charge at Stamford Bridge, highlighting his ability to deliver success under pressure.

Before his tenure at Chelsea, Maresca had already demonstrated his managerial capabilities with Leicester City. Taking charge of the club after leaving Manchester City in 2023, he led Leicester to promotion back to the Premier League in his debut season. His success there further enhanced his reputation as one of the most promising coaches of his generation.

However, Maresca’s connection to Manchester City runs deeper than his recent managerial achievements. He previously served as an assistant to Guardiola during City’s historic treble-winning 2022–23 campaign, playing an integral role in the coaching setup. In addition to his work with the first team, he was also heavily involved in the club’s academy structure, contributing to player development and tactical implementation across different levels.

Guardiola himself has spoken highly of Maresca in the past, praising both his tactical understanding and his accomplishments. The Spaniard has described him as one of the finest coaches in modern football, emphasizing that his work—particularly at Chelsea—has not always received the recognition it deserves. Such endorsement from a figure of Guardiola’s stature carries significant weight and has likely influenced City’s decision-making process.

Despite his impressive résumé, Maresca’s potential appointment does come with a degree of uncertainty. Unlike Guardiola, who arrived at City with an already established legacy built at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Maresca does not yet possess the same level of elite managerial experience. His rise has been relatively rapid, and stepping into one of the most high-profile roles in world football will present a formidable challenge.

Replacing Guardiola is widely regarded as one of the most difficult tasks in football. Over the course of his tenure, Guardiola has transformed Manchester City into a global powerhouse, redefining tactical standards and consistently delivering silverware. His departure represents a seismic shift for the club, and whoever follows him will inevitably face intense scrutiny and immense expectations.

Maresca’s previous experience of succeeding Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea provides some insight into his ability to handle pressure. However, the scale of the challenge at Manchester City is significantly greater. Not only will he be expected to maintain the club’s winning culture, but he will also need to uphold the distinctive style of play that has become synonymous with Guardiola’s reign.

One of Maresca’s strengths lies in his adherence to a possession-based philosophy, closely aligned with Guardiola’s principles. During his time at Chelsea, he implemented a system focused on controlled build-up play, patience in possession, and tactical fluidity. His teams typically operated in a 4-2-3-1 formation, though positional rotations allowed for flexibility depending on the opponent.

This stylistic similarity is one of the key reasons why Manchester City’s hierarchy sees him as an ideal fit. His understanding of Guardiola’s methods means he could provide continuity, ensuring a smoother transition during what could otherwise be a period of upheaval. The club’s leadership values stability, and Maresca’s familiarity with their approach reduces the risk associated with such a significant managerial change.

That said, his tenure at Chelsea was not without its challenges. Reports indicate that his final months at the club were marked by tensions with the ownership, particularly regarding transfer decisions and squad management. These disagreements eventually led to his departure in early 2026, despite his on-field successes. Nevertheless, he remained well-regarded by many players and staff, and his work was appreciated within the dressing room.

Manchester City’s decision-makers are believed to have conducted thorough due diligence before moving forward with Maresca. Their long-term planning has ensured that this transition is not a reactive move, but rather a carefully considered step toward the future. The club’s Abu Dhabi-based ownership has been preparing for Guardiola’s eventual exit for some time, evaluating various scenarios and potential candidates.

The endorsement from Guardiola, combined with Maresca’s familiarity with the club and his recent achievements, makes him a compelling choice. However, there is no escaping the fact that this appointment represents a step into the unknown. Even the most promising managers can struggle when faced with the expectations that come with leading a club of Manchester City’s stature.

If confirmed, Maresca will inherit a squad filled with world-class talent and a structure designed for success. His challenge will be to maintain the high standards set by his predecessor while also imprinting his own identity on the team. Balancing continuity with innovation will be crucial as he navigates his early months in charge.

Ultimately, the transition from Guardiola to Maresca symbolizes both an ending and a beginning. It marks the conclusion of one of the most successful managerial eras in football history, while also offering an opportunity for a new voice to lead Manchester City forward. Whether Maresca can rise to the occasion and build on Guardiola’s legacy remains to be seen, but the foundations are certainly in place for him to succeed.
