From Benidorm beaches to Barcelona – the rise of Lopez
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The rise of Vicky Lopez to the top level of women’s football is a story that feels almost too remarkable to be true. From humble beginnings involving a chance encounter on a beach to becoming one of the brightest young talents in the sport, her journey reflects determination, talent, and a touch of fate.

At just 19 years old, Lopez has already established herself as a key figure for both FC Barcelona Femení and Spain women’s national football team. Over the past year, she has transitioned from a promising youngster into a regular starter among some of the biggest names in world football. Competing alongside Ballon d’Or winners and global stars, she has shown maturity far beyond her years and appears destined for even greater achievements, including potential global stardom by the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

One of the biggest milestones in her young career comes with her involvement in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, where Barcelona face Olympique Lyonnais Féminin in Oslo. It marks her first appearance in such a prestigious club final and represents another step forward in her rapid development.

Lopez’s story begins in Vallecas, a working-class neighborhood in Madrid, where she was born in 2006 to a Spanish father and a Nigerian mother. Her introduction to football came at an early age, often playing in the streets with her older brother. These informal games helped shape her distinctive style—creative, quick, and fearless—traits that continue to define her play today.

According to Spanish football journalist Irati Vidal, Lopez’s game is heavily influenced by street football. She grew up watching and trying to replicate the flair and dribbling skills of Neymar, which is evident in her attacking approach and confidence on the ball.

Her talent quickly became apparent, leading her to join local youth teams where she initially played in defensive positions. It was during this time that Alba Mellado, a professional footballer and youth coach at Madrid CFF, spotted her potential. Mellado recognized Lopez’s exceptional ability and attempted to bring her into the club’s setup.

Initially, Lopez was hesitant to leave her friends and familiar environment. However, a chance meeting during a family trip to Benidorm changed everything. Mellado encountered Lopez playing football on the beach and used a clever approach to connect with her—wearing a Rayo Vallecano shirt to spark familiarity.

In a memorable twist, Mellado even bought an inflatable boat for Lopez and her cousins as part of her effort to win her over. The gesture worked, and shortly after, Lopez’s father agreed to let her join Madrid CFF, marking the first major step in her football journey.

Despite her rapid progress, Lopez’s path was not without hardship. At the age of 11, she experienced a devastating personal loss when her mother passed away from a brain tumor. During this difficult time, Mellado and her teammates provided crucial support, helping her stay focused on football and maintain some normalcy in her life.

Lopez responded to these challenges with remarkable resilience. Her development accelerated, and she began to dominate youth competitions. In 2019, she was named the most valuable player in a La Liga youth tournament after scoring seven goals, including a hat-trick in the final. Her scoring ability became even more evident in the 2020–21 season, where she netted an astonishing 60 goals in just 17 matches.

Her performances soon earned her opportunities at higher levels. In September 2021, she made history by becoming the youngest player to appear in Spain’s top flight, debuting at just 15 years and 42 days old. This achievement highlighted her exceptional talent and readiness to compete at the highest level.

In 2022, Lopez’s career took another major leap forward when Barcelona signed her on her 16th birthday. Shortly after, she became the youngest player to debut for the club’s professional team. Interestingly, she wore the number 30 shirt—the same number once worn by Lionel Messi at the start of his legendary career.

Her impact at Barcelona was immediate. She became the club’s youngest-ever debutant in the Champions League and also the youngest player to score in Liga F. These milestones reinforced her reputation as one of the most exciting young prospects in world football.

Internationally, Lopez continued to shine. She played a key role in Spain’s triumph at the Under-17 World Cup in India, where she was named the tournament’s best player. Her performances caught global attention and signaled her arrival on the big stage.

In February 2024, Lopez made her senior debut for Spain, replacing Jenni Hermoso during a Nations League semi-final. At just 17 years old, she became the youngest player to represent the national team, further cementing her status as a rising star.

The 2024–25 season proved to be a breakthrough campaign. Lopez stepped up in crucial moments, including filling in for the ill Aitana Bonmatí and helping Spain reach the final of Euro 2025. Her performances earned her the prestigious Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best young player in the world.

Although she initially played as a winger, Lopez has increasingly been used in a central midfield role. Competing with top players like Bonmatí, Patri Guijarro, and her idol Alexia Putellas, she has managed to secure a place in the starting lineup thanks to her versatility and skill.

Her playing style combines intelligence, technical excellence, and athleticism. She is equally capable of scoring goals and creating opportunities for her teammates. This season alone, she has contributed nine goals and nine assists in 26 league matches, demonstrating her effectiveness in attack.

Observers often highlight her fearless approach to the game. Lopez is not afraid to take risks or try new things, which makes her an exciting player to watch. Her confidence and creativity have quickly made her a fan favorite.

With over 120 appearances for Barcelona and more than 20 caps for Spain before turning 20, Lopez’s achievements are already impressive. Many believe she is destined to become one of the best players in the world. England international Keira Walsh has even suggested that Lopez could win the Ballon d’Or in the future.

Similarly, Lucy Bronze has predicted that Lopez will rank among the world’s elite players. Such praise from established stars underscores the high expectations surrounding her career.

Despite her growing fame, Lopez remains grounded. She continues to pursue her education, studying business and administration management while balancing the demands of professional football.

Looking ahead, she has set her sights on winning the World Cup with Spain. Although she missed the 2023 triumph, she is determined to play a key role in future tournaments, particularly the 2027 edition in Brazil.

For Lopez, football is more than just a career—it is deeply personal. She has often spoken about her desire to make her late mother proud, a motivation that drives her both on and off the pitch.

Her journey, shaped by talent, resilience, and unforgettable moments, serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers around the world. And as she continues to grow, there is little doubt that Vicky Lopez is on her way to becoming a true icon of the game.
