Robertson, Dalglish and a special connection between Liverpool and Scotland

Andy Robertson’s journey at Liverpool is a remarkable story of growth, resilience, and legacy. Born after Sir Kenny Dalglish had already ended his first managerial spell at the club in 1991, Robertson grew up hearing about the legendary Scots who shaped Liverpool’s history. When he eventually joined the club in 2017, he quickly became aware of the expectations that came with following in the footsteps of such iconic figures.

Speaking in an interview with Kelly Cates and her father, Kenny Dalglish, Robertson reflected on how those Scottish legends influenced his mindset when he first arrived at Anfield. He recalled being reminded of great names like Dalglish, Alan Hansen, and Graeme Souness, all of whom had left a lasting impact at the club. Robertson understood that Liverpool supporters have always had a special appreciation for Scottish players, often associating them with success and determination.

The bond between Liverpool and Scotland dates back decades, largely shaped by the influence of Bill Shankly, another iconic Scottish figure who transformed the club into a powerhouse. Among all Scottish players associated with Liverpool, Dalglish remains one of the most revered. During his time as both a player and manager, he scored 172 goals and helped the club secure 18 major trophies, including multiple league titles and European Cups.

More than three decades later, Robertson has carried that Scottish legacy forward. As he prepares to play his final match at Anfield, he leaves behind a career that has firmly established him as one of the club’s modern greats. His journey to the top has been anything but conventional.

When Jurgen Klopp signed Robertson from Hull City for just £8 million, few could have predicted the impact he would have. Only a few years earlier, he had been playing in Scotland’s fourth tier with Queen’s Park. That humble beginning makes his rise to the elite level of European football even more impressive.

Over the course of nine years at Liverpool, Robertson redefined the role of a full-back. Known for his energy, consistency, and attacking contributions, he became a key part of Klopp’s system. His tally of 60 Premier League assists is among the highest for a defender, second only to his former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

During his time at the club, Robertson helped Liverpool win nine major trophies, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Beyond the statistics and silverware, however, his legacy is defined by his passion and connection with the fans. He played every match with intensity and commitment, embodying the spirit of the club.

Kenny Dalglish himself praised Robertson, describing him as a player who brought pride to Liverpool. Such recognition from a club legend highlights the significance of Robertson’s contributions.

As Robertson prepares to leave Liverpool, his focus shifts to his role as captain of the Scotland national team. He is on the verge of matching Dalglish’s record of 102 international caps, needing just 10 more appearances. Looking ahead, he hopes to lead Scotland to their first men’s World Cup in nearly three decades.

Despite the successes, Robertson’s career has also been marked by difficult moments and personal challenges. One of the most profound was the tragic loss of his close friend and teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in July 2025. The incident had a deep emotional impact on the team and disrupted their preparations for the season.

Reflecting on that period, Robertson admitted that football became secondary. Pre-season training, which is typically focused on fitness and preparation, was overshadowed by grief. Coaches and players alike struggled to maintain normal routines, as the loss affected everyone deeply.

Despite the emotional toll, the team had to continue competing. Robertson explained that players often have to perform under difficult circumstances because fans expect to see their team play. In some ways, continuing to compete can help provide a sense of normalcy and healing, but it also adds pressure on those dealing with personal loss.

Liverpool started the season strongly despite the tragedy, but inconsistency soon followed. Robertson acknowledged that the emotional impact likely contributed to fluctuations in performance. However, he emphasized that the team would not use the tragedy as an excuse for underachievement.

By the end of the season, Liverpool found themselves in fifth place in the Premier League standings. Robertson openly admitted that the team had fallen short of expectations, citing issues with consistency, aggression, and overall performance. He stressed that the players were aware of their shortcomings and were determined to improve.

Throughout his career, Robertson experienced both triumphs and heartbreak. Liverpool came close to winning the Premier League on multiple occasions, finishing just one point behind Manchester City in two separate seasons. They also suffered defeats in Champions League finals, which were difficult setbacks for the team.

However, those disappointments served as motivation. Under Jurgen Klopp, the team developed a mentality of resilience. After losing the 2018 Champions League final to Real Madrid, Klopp encouraged his players to view it as the beginning of a journey rather than the end. His belief paid off when Liverpool returned to the final the following year and emerged victorious.

That success was followed by Liverpool’s long-awaited Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year wait. Robertson recalled the immense desire among fans to win the league, noting that he felt that pressure from the moment he joined the club.

The departure of Jurgen Klopp raised questions about Liverpool’s future, but new manager Arne Slot quickly proved that the team could continue to succeed. In his first season, Slot led Liverpool to another league title, matching Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight championships. Robertson expressed pride in the team’s ability to adapt and prove doubters wrong.

As Robertson prepares for his final match at Anfield, he reflects on his time at the club with gratitude. The match against Brentford represents not just the end of a season, but the conclusion of an era. He is determined to enjoy the moment and appreciate the journey he has experienced.

The game also marks the departure of another Liverpool icon, Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward, who joined the club in the same transfer window as Robertson, has become one of Liverpool’s greatest players, scoring 257 goals and ranking among the club’s all-time top scorers.

Despite their individual achievements, both players leave at a time when the team has not fully met expectations. However, Robertson remains optimistic about Liverpool’s future. He believes that the current squad has the potential to achieve success, given time to adapt and grow.

In the end, Andy Robertson’s legacy at Liverpool goes beyond trophies and records. He represents determination, humility, and passion—qualities that have endeared him to fans and ensured his place in the club’s rich history.
