Bellingham set to start for England against Croatia

England are preparing to kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a highly anticipated clash against Croatia, and one of the biggest talking points ahead of the match is the role of Jude Bellingham. The 22-year-old midfielder is expected to take up the iconic number 10 position, a role that carries both creative responsibility and immense pressure.

Under the guidance of manager Thomas Tuchel, England have been refining their tactical setup, and it now appears increasingly likely that Bellingham will be entrusted with orchestrating the team’s attacking play. This decision comes despite growing competition for the position, particularly from Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, who has recently emerged as a strong contender for the advanced midfield role.

Tuchel’s preference for Bellingham is not without reason. The Real Madrid star has consistently demonstrated his ability to influence matches at the highest level. Since his move to Spain, he has evolved into one of the most complete midfielders in world football, combining technical brilliance, physical presence, and tactical intelligence. His performances in both club and international football have solidified his reputation as a player capable of leading England’s creative line.

Reports suggest that Tuchel sees Bellingham as a central figure in his World Cup plans, particularly in games where England need a player who can both create chances and contribute defensively. His versatility allows him to drop deeper when required, link up play effectively, and also make decisive runs into the final third.

In England’s opening Group L fixture against Croatia, which will take place in Dallas, the spotlight will firmly be on Bellingham. The match is scheduled for Wednesday evening, and it represents a crucial opportunity for England to assert early dominance in the group. Croatia, known for their experienced midfield and tactical discipline, will pose a significant challenge.

Despite the competition for places, Bellingham appears to have edged ahead in the race for the number 10 role. Morgan Rogers, while impressive in recent appearances, may have to settle for a place on the bench or be used as an impact substitute. This highlights the depth of talent available to Tuchel, who faces difficult selection decisions across multiple positions.

Behind Bellingham, England are expected to field a balanced midfield trio. Arsenal’s Declan Rice is likely to play a key role as a holding midfielder, providing defensive stability and allowing the more advanced players to express themselves. Alongside him, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is expected to bring energy and creativity, forming a dynamic partnership that complements Bellingham’s attacking instincts.

This midfield combination reflects Tuchel’s desire to strike the right balance between control and creativity. Rice’s ability to break up opposition attacks and distribute the ball efficiently will be crucial, while Anderson’s work rate and technical skills add another dimension to England’s play. Together, they create a platform for Bellingham to operate freely in the final third.

Bellingham’s recent performances have further strengthened his case for selection. In England’s warm-up matches leading up to the tournament, he showcased his ability to influence games in multiple ways. His pressing, movement, and link-up play with teammates have all been notable, making him a natural choice for the advanced midfield role.

Moreover, his chemistry with key attacking players such as Harry Kane has shown signs of improvement. This partnership could prove vital as England look to break down stubborn defenses. Kane’s ability to drop deep and create space, combined with Bellingham’s forward runs, offers a promising attacking dynamic.

Tuchel’s decision to rely on Bellingham also reflects his broader tactical philosophy. The German manager prefers players who are adaptable and capable of fulfilling multiple roles within a system. Bellingham fits this profile perfectly, as he can seamlessly transition between attacking and defensive duties.

The upcoming match against Croatia carries added significance due to the history between the two sides. Their encounters have often been closely contested, including Croatia’s memorable victory over England in the 2018 World Cup semi-final. This adds an extra layer of motivation for the England squad, who will be eager to start their campaign on a positive note.

Croatia, despite having an aging core of experienced players, remain a formidable opponent. Their midfield, led by seasoned professionals, is known for its composure and technical quality. England will need to be at their best to overcome this challenge, and much will depend on how effectively Bellingham can influence the game.

Tuchel has expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and believes that the World Cup environment will bring out the best in his players. The squad has undergone rigorous training and acclimatization in the United States, ensuring they are ready for the demands of the tournament.

As the countdown to kickoff continues, all eyes will be on the starting lineup. If Bellingham is indeed selected in the number 10 role, it will mark a significant vote of confidence from Tuchel. It will also place the young midfielder at the heart of England’s World Cup ambitions.

Ultimately, England’s success in the tournament may hinge on how well their key players perform in crucial moments. Bellingham, with his talent and composure, has the potential to be one of the standout performers. His ability to rise to the occasion and deliver when it matters most could prove decisive.

For fans and analysts alike, this opening match offers a glimpse into England’s tactical approach and overall potential. A strong performance against Croatia would not only boost confidence but also set the tone for the rest of the campaign.

As England step onto the pitch in Dallas, the expectations will be high. With Bellingham leading the creative charge, the team will be aiming to make a statement and take a significant step toward World Cup success.
