Can Bellingham become England’s superstar once more at the World Cup?

Jude Bellingham’s Quest to Reignite His England Career Ahead of the World Cup

When Jude Bellingham turned toward England supporters and confidently mouthed “who else?” after scoring a breathtaking overhead kick against Slovakia at Euro 2024, it perfectly captured his rising influence within the national team. That unforgettable moment, arriving at 94 minutes and 34 seconds in Gelsenkirchen, rescued England from a shocking elimination and ultimately paved the way for a dramatic 2-1 victory after extra time in the last 16.

The goal instantly became one of the tournament’s defining highlights, reinforcing Bellingham’s reputation as England’s golden talent. Despite England’s eventual heartbreak in the final against Spain in Berlin, Bellingham’s status as the team’s standout star seemed firmly secured.

However, as the World Cup approaches two years later, the narrative surrounding Bellingham has shifted. While his talent remains unquestioned, his aura has slightly faded amid competition, injuries, and tactical decisions. The 22-year-old now finds himself in a position where he must once again prove his worth on the international stage.

England’s opening World Cup clash against Croatia in Dallas presents Bellingham with the perfect opportunity to reassert himself. He appears to have edged out Morgan Rogers for the coveted number 10 role behind captain Harry Kane, but the competition has been fierce and ongoing.

Under the management of Thomas Tuchel, England’s squad dynamic has evolved significantly. Tuchel has made it clear that no player, regardless of reputation, is guaranteed a place. His refusal to rely on star power alone has created a more competitive environment, one that has directly impacted Bellingham.

The emergence of Rogers, who has impressed with Aston Villa, has intensified the battle for attacking midfield positions. Once considered untouchable, Bellingham has had to fight for his spot—something that seemed unimaginable after his Euro 2024 heroics.

Tuchel’s relationship with Bellingham has not always been smooth. At times, it has appeared strained, particularly when the coach made controversial remarks about the midfielder’s on-field behavior. Following a friendly defeat to Senegal, Tuchel admitted that even his mother had found Bellingham’s conduct “repulsive,” a comment he later clarified as unintentional but which still sparked widespread debate.

The tension deepened when Bellingham was left out of England’s squad for matches against Wales and Latvia, despite being eager to return after recovering from shoulder surgery. Tuchel’s decision was a clear signal that performance and readiness would outweigh reputation.

These interruptions, combined with injuries to his shoulder and hamstring, have limited Bellingham’s involvement. Since the Euro 2024 final, he has started only nine of England’s 20 matches, a statistic that reflects his inconsistent presence within the squad.

Despite these setbacks, Bellingham has arrived in the United States looking refreshed and determined. Following a mixed season with Real Madrid, he appears physically sharp and mentally focused. More importantly, he seems fully integrated into Tuchel’s system as England aim to end their long wait for World Cup success—a drought stretching back to 1966.

Signs of his growing maturity and leadership have also been evident. In the dressing room, Bellingham was seen presenting Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha with his first international cap after his debut against New Zealand. The moment highlighted Bellingham’s increasing influence within the squad, despite his relatively young age.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Bellingham is rediscovering his best form at just the right time. Observing training sessions and team dynamics, Robinson noted that the midfielder looks as focused and determined as ever.

Robinson strongly supports Bellingham’s inclusion in the starting lineup, emphasizing his experience in major tournaments. Having already competed in World Cups, European Championships, and high-pressure matches for Real Madrid, Bellingham brings invaluable composure and confidence.

He also pointed out that Bellingham possesses a unique quality—an “X-factor”—that sets him apart from other players. When fully motivated and performing at his peak, he can change the course of a game single-handedly.

However, Robinson also acknowledged the reality of the current situation: Bellingham is no longer irreplaceable. While Kane remains indispensable, the presence of Rogers offers a viable alternative in the number 10 role. This added competition ensures that Bellingham must consistently deliver top performances to maintain his place.

Tuchel’s approach appears to be deliberate. By challenging Bellingham and removing any sense of entitlement, he may have reignited the player’s hunger and determination. In recent friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica, glimpses of the “old Bellingham” have re-emerged—dynamic, confident, and influential.

Bellingham himself has reflected on England’s shortcomings at Euro 2024, suggesting that issues off the pitch affected team cohesion. He noted that expectations were extremely high, and despite winning matches, the squad lacked the unity and satisfaction needed for sustained success.

Now, under Tuchel’s leadership, there is a renewed sense of purpose and structure within the team. Bellingham appears to be embracing this environment, balancing his competitive edge with a more relaxed and positive attitude.

As England prepare for their World Cup campaign, much will depend on Bellingham’s ability to deliver in crucial moments. His talent is undeniable, but consistency and discipline will be key factors in determining his impact.

The upcoming tournament represents both a challenge and an opportunity. For Bellingham, it is a chance to silence critics, reaffirm his status, and help lead England to glory. For Tuchel, it is about maximizing the potential of a gifted squad without favoritism.

If Bellingham can combine his natural ability with the work ethic demanded by his coach, he could once again become the player who inspires England on the biggest stage. And if that happens, the question “who else?” may once again have only one answer.
