Working with Postecoglou and following the data – Salford’s new boss Cklamovski

Salford City’s unexpected decision to appoint Peter Cklamovski as their new manager on a long-term contract can be traced back to connections formed in Japan nearly a decade ago. While the Australian coach may not yet be a familiar figure within English football, he was already well-known to key figures within the club’s leadership.

One of those figures is Salford’s chief executive, Gavin Fleig, who joined the club in October 2025. Before arriving at Salford, Fleig spent 17 years working within the City Football Group (CFG), including seven years as director of talent management. During that time, he was exposed to a wide range of coaches and managerial talents across CFG’s global network of clubs.

It was during this period that Fleig first became aware of Cklamovski, who was working as an assistant coach under Ange Postecoglou at Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan. At the time, the club was enjoying success in the J-League, and Cklamovski was earning recognition for his contributions behind the scenes. Fleig was impressed not only by his tactical knowledge but also by his coaching philosophy and leadership qualities.

While Postecoglou’s career trajectory has since been widely followed—taking him to clubs such as Celtic, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nottingham Forest—Cklamovski’s journey has been more understated. The 47-year-old has built his experience across several roles, including positions at Shimizu S-Pulse, Montedio Yamagata, FC Tokyo, and most recently with the Malaysia national team. Despite operating largely outside Europe, he has developed a reputation for delivering positive results and promoting an attacking, entertaining style of football.

Fleig had always kept Cklamovski in mind as a potential managerial candidate should the opportunity arise. That opportunity presented itself when Salford City parted ways with Karl Robinson following their defeat to Notts County in the League Two play-off final at Wembley. Although Robinson had guided the team close to promotion, the club decided to pursue a new direction.

As part of the recruitment process, Fleig and his team conducted a thorough evaluation of potential candidates. This included analyzing data, consulting their network, and considering the level of interest from prospective managers. According to Fleig, Cklamovski stood out clearly across all key criteria.

At the time, Cklamovski was preparing for an upcoming Southeast Asian Championship campaign with Malaysia, with matches scheduled against Myanmar and Laos. However, he had already begun reflecting on his career and felt a growing ambition to test himself in European football.

Coincidentally, Cklamovski was in the United Kingdom with his family at the end of an extended holiday when Fleig made contact. The timing proved crucial. Although he initially planned to return to Malaysia, he quickly changed his plans after speaking with Fleig, canceling his flight to pursue discussions in person.

This level of commitment made a strong impression on Salford’s leadership. Beyond his coaching credentials, his determination and willingness to seize the opportunity reinforced their belief that he was the right choice.

Despite his lack of direct experience in English football, Salford are confident in their decision. The club highlighted Cklamovski’s attacking philosophy and ability to engage supporters as key factors behind his appointment. They believe his fresh perspective will be valuable as the club aims to progress and achieve its ambitions.

Cklamovski is fully aware that success outside Europe does not always guarantee immediate recognition in England. However, he remains confident in his approach. He emphasizes the importance of a process-driven and evidence-based methodology, focusing on continuous improvement and consistent execution.

Drawing inspiration from his long-standing relationship with Postecoglou, Cklamovski has built his coaching philosophy on strong principles. The two have shared a close professional bond for over 15 years, working together in various roles, including with Australia’s youth teams and during successful stints in Australia’s domestic league and international competitions.

Their collaboration included notable achievements such as winning the A-League with Brisbane Roar and securing the AFC Asian Cup with Australia. Throughout this journey, Postecoglou has served as a mentor to Cklamovski, providing guidance and support as he developed his own managerial identity.

Even now, the two remain in regular contact, with Cklamovski valuing the advice and insights he receives. This mentorship has played a significant role in shaping his career and preparing him for opportunities like the one at Salford.

Upon officially taking up his role, Cklamovski’s initial focus has been on integrating into the club environment. His first day involved handling administrative responsibilities and meeting key personnel. While he has yet to speak directly with co-owners Gary Neville and David Beckham, he is fully aware of the expectations that come with the role.

His family is expected to join him in England in the coming weeks, allowing him to settle into both his professional and personal life. With pre-season preparations approaching, he is eager to begin working with the squad and implementing his ideas.

The task ahead is clear. Despite coming close to promotion last season, Salford are determined to take the next step and secure a place in League One. Cklamovski understands the pressure but embraces the challenge with enthusiasm.

He has made it clear that his objective is not simply to participate but to achieve success. He views the opportunity as a significant milestone in his career and is motivated to deliver results.

Salford City’s ambitions align with Cklamovski’s own aspirations. The club has consistently demonstrated its desire to climb the English football pyramid, and the appointment of a forward-thinking manager reflects that vision.

Ultimately, this decision represents a bold move by Salford. By appointing a manager with a diverse background and a progressive approach, they are signaling their intent to innovate and evolve.

For Cklamovski, it is a chance to prove himself on a new stage. With determination, experience, and a clear philosophy, he now has the platform to make a lasting impact in English football.

As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on how this partnership develops. If successful, it could mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both the manager and the club.
