Messi becomes World Cup all-time leading scorer – how has he stayed at the top?

When Lionel Messi curled a stunning left-footed strike into the net during Argentina’s second World Cup fixture against Austria, it was more than just an opening goal to give his team momentum. That moment also cemented his place in football history, as the Argentine legend became the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history. Even at 38, Messi continues to prove that he remains one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.

The goal itself was classic Messi—precise, elegant, and unstoppable. But he didn’t stop there. Later in the match, he added a second goal from a tight angle, skillfully navigating past two Austrian defenders before finishing confidently. His brace secured a 2-0 victory for Argentina and further highlighted his incredible form as the reigning champions aim to defend their title.

Messi’s performances in the tournament so far have been nothing short of sensational. After scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening game, he followed it up with two more goals in the second match, along with breaking the long-standing World Cup scoring record. With another group-stage match against Jordan still to come, Messi is emerging as a strong contender for the Golden Boot—an award given to the tournament’s top scorer, which has surprisingly eluded him throughout his illustrious career.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Messi’s current form is his consistency. He has now scored in six consecutive World Cup matches, a feat achieved only twice before—by France’s Just Fontaine in 1958 and Brazil’s Jairzinho in 1970. No player in history has managed to score in seven straight World Cup matches, meaning Messi is on the verge of setting yet another record.

In addition to his goal-scoring exploits, Messi continues to excel creatively. He holds the record for creating the most chances in World Cup history and is just one assist away from becoming the outright leader in that category since records began in 1966. Currently, he shares that record with his idol, Diego Maradona, further underlining his all-around brilliance.

Despite the rise of a new generation of football superstars such as Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Vinicius Jr, Messi remains the benchmark. These younger players may be making headlines and establishing their own legacies, but surpassing Messi’s impact on the biggest stage remains a formidable challenge.

Many have questioned how Messi, now approaching 39 and playing in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, continues to deliver such high-level performances. His longevity and consistency are a testament to his professionalism, dedication, and love for the game.

Looking back, there was a time when doubts surrounded Messi’s ability to continue dominating at the World Cup level. After Argentina’s dramatic defeat to France in the 2018 World Cup—a thrilling seven-goal encounter—some believed that his era of leading Argentina in major tournaments had come to an end. However, Messi silenced those doubts by guiding Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, scoring seven goals in the process.

Now, four years later, he has reached another milestone by becoming the first player ever to score in six consecutive World Cup matches. His sustained excellence is a rare achievement in modern football, especially given the physical and mental demands of the sport.

Olivier Giroud, who was part of the French team that won the 2018 World Cup and is still playing at a high level at 39, offered insight into what drives players like Messi to continue performing at the highest level. According to Giroud, the key lies in self-motivation and a constant desire to improve.

He emphasized that maintaining peak performance at such an age requires strict discipline, including proper rest, nutrition, and overall physical care. However, beyond physical preparation, the most important factor is the passion for the game and the desire to keep competing.

Sports psychologist Michael Caulfield also highlighted the mental aspect of longevity in professional sports. He explained that experienced players like Messi understand their bodies and routines exceptionally well, allowing them to maximize their performance even as they age.

Caulfield noted that mental resilience is crucial, as players must continue to endure the daily grind of training, recovery, and competition. After decades at the top level, maintaining motivation can be challenging, but elite athletes thrive on pushing their limits and striving for continuous improvement.

Messi’s technical ability has also played a significant role in his longevity. While age may reduce physical explosiveness, it does not diminish his skill, vision, or understanding of the game. His exceptional ball control, decision-making, and finishing ability allow him to remain effective even against younger, faster opponents.

Former England striker Wayne Rooney admitted that he initially doubted Messi’s ability to maintain his high standards in yet another World Cup. However, Messi’s recent performances have proven him wrong.

Rooney pointed out that while physical attributes may decline with age, a player’s technical skills remain intact. Messi’s ability to influence games in and around the penalty area continues to set him apart from others.

There is even speculation that if Messi maintains this level of performance, he could potentially feature in another World Cup, further extending his already legendary career.

Beyond his technical and physical attributes, Messi’s passion for football remains a driving force behind his success. Those who have played alongside him often speak about his relentless desire to win and his love for the game.

Former teammate Cesc Fabregas described Messi as a completely different person once he steps onto the pitch. Despite his calm and humble demeanor off the field, he becomes intensely competitive during matches, determined to win at all costs.

This inner drive is what keeps athletes like Messi striving for more, even after achieving everything possible in the sport. According to Caulfield, elite athletes are always searching for new challenges and ways to improve, regardless of their accomplishments.

Messi’s emotional connection to the game was evident when he celebrated a goal in Argentina’s opening match, visibly moved and in tears. His family later revealed that his father was dealing with a health issue, adding a personal dimension to his performances.

Meanwhile, Messi’s long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo is also participating in his sixth World Cup. However, his performances have not matched Messi’s impact so far, with a relatively quiet display in Portugal’s opening match.

Rooney suggested that Ronaldo’s competitive nature means he will be motivated to respond to Messi’s brilliance. The rivalry between the two legends has defined an era of football, pushing both players to achieve extraordinary heights.

Ultimately, Messi’s current form is a reminder that greatness is not solely defined by youth or physical prowess. His combination of skill, intelligence, experience, and passion continues to make him a dominant force on the world stage.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will remain on Messi to see whether he can maintain his incredible run and potentially lead Argentina to another World Cup triumph.
