Pakistan vs UAE Asia Cup 2025: Knockout Clash in Dubai

Big Picture

Pakistan’s upcoming Asia Cup clash is set to be decisive. Unlike their previous match, which ended without much warmth, this one will certainly bring a farewell either for UAE or Pakistan. One team will move into the Super Four alongside India, while the other will exit the tournament.

Both sides come into this game with one win and one loss: each beat Oman comfortably, but both were heavily outplayed by India. That makes Wednesday’s contest in Dubai a straight knockout.

On paper, Pakistan are favourites. They’ve already beaten UAE twice in recent weeks during the tri-series in Sharjah. Still, in both encounters UAE managed to push them at times before fading away. That inability to sustain pressure has been the difference between an Associate side and a Full Member one.

Pakistan’s bigger concern is consistency. Their heavy defeat to India was described by coach Mike Hesson as “a bad day,” but questions remain over whether Pakistan thrive only against weaker opposition.

They have beaten weaker teams, but against stronger opponents they have struggled. This shows they may not handle pressure well.

Even so, Pakistan’s skill and depth, especially in the spin department, should give them an edge. With wristspinners in the line-up alongside Saim Ayub and Mohammad Nawaz, they seem to have settled on a balanced XI capable of handling this challenge.

For UAE, this is the biggest game of their year. They’ve shown promise in the last few weeks, running both Pakistan and Afghanistan close during the tri-series and securing an impressive win over Oman.

Their batting strength lies at the top: captain Muhammad Waseem is in fine touch, and his 88-run partnership with Alishan Sharafu against Oman showed they now have multiple scoring options at the top. With Asif Khan batting at number three, their top order looks dangerous.

UAE will also lean on their spinners. Haider Ali, who picked up 2 for 22 against Oman, leads the pack, while Dhruv Parashar’s offspin has also drawn praise from his captain. If their bowlers can hold their nerve, UAE have the tools to challenge Pakistan and perhaps cause the tournament’s biggest upset.

Form Guide

In the Spotlight

For Pakistan, Fakhar Zaman remains a key figure. When on song, he can turn games on his own. The last time these sides met, Pakistan were in trouble at 80 for 5 before Zaman’s unbeaten 77 off 44 balls took them home.

While he hasn’t converted many starts into big scores lately, his ability to play impactful cameos still makes him dangerous. UAE, however, will be aware of his vulnerability early in the innings.

Asif Khan will be central for UAE. He made headlines when he blasted Pakistan’s spinners for 77 off just 35 balls in the tri-series. Since then, his form has dipped, with only one notable knock — 40 against Afghanistan — in his last few innings.

For a side that lacks middle-order power, his performance could be the difference between victory and defeat.

Team News

The Pakistan are likely to maintain the same XI that they have used in the recent matches.

Pakistan (probable): Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Salman Ali Agha (capt), Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Haris (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem, Abrar Ahmed.

UAE are also not likely to change their victory over Oman.

UAE (probably): Alishan Sharafu, Muhammad Waseem (capt), Muhammad Zohaib, Asif Khan, Harshit Kaushik, Rahul Chopra (wk), Dhruv Parashar, Haider Ali, Muhammad Rohid Khan, Muhammad Jawadullah, Junaid Siddique.

Pitch and Conditions

Hot and humid conditions continue in the UAE. The surface is expected to aid spin, which could make slower bowlers crucial to the outcome.

Stats and Trivia

  • Pakistan have lost six matches in men’s T20 Asia Cups, the second-most after Hong Kong.
  • Across all Asia Cup formats, Pakistan have 26 defeats, second only to Bangladesh’s 44.
  • UAE captain Muhammad Waseem recently crossed 3000 T20I runs, more than any current Pakistani player. Fakhar Zaman, with 2144, is the only Pakistani in the side to have crossed 1000.
