Erling Haaland’s second-half strike was enough for Manchester City to beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, despite playing more than an hour with ten men after Phil Foden’s first-half red card.
Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes while on the ground, reducing City to ten men for the remainder of the match. United dominated possession with the extra man, and both Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo struck the woodwork, but they could not find a breakthrough.
Haaland broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, turning in a Josko Gvardiol cross at the far post. The goal was initially flagged for offside before VAR intervened, ruling that Haaland himself was onside and that Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position nearby, had not interfered with play.
City held on for the win despite their numerical disadvantage, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma producing a crucial stoppage-time save to deny Bryan Mbeumo.
The result leaves Manchester United with four points from four matches, while City remain unbeaten and top of the Premier League table.
