ICC unlikely to move Bangladesh T20 World Cup matches from India

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to deliver its decision in the coming days regarding a formal appeal lodged by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to relocate Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 from India to Sri Lanka, citing security-related concerns.

The request followed the release of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, reportedly after a recommendation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) amid worries over player safety. The move raised concerns within the BCB, prompting officials to formally approach the ICC seeking alternative arrangements for their team during the global event.

Despite the request, multiple sources indicate that the ICC is unlikely to approve a complete relocation of Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka. With less than four weeks remaining before the tournament begins on February 7, logistical challenges remain a major hurdle. Tournament scheduling, broadcasting commitments, team travel, security coordination, and commercial agreements would all be affected by such a late change.

According to reports from Cricbuzz, NDTV, and Business Standard, the ICC is instead focusing on possible venue adjustments within India. Officials believe that shifting matches domestically would be far more practical than moving them to another country at this advanced stage of preparations.

Among the alternatives being explored are Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram, both of which have emerged as strong contingency options. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has confirmed that MA Chidambaram Stadium can accommodate additional fixtures, highlighting the availability of eight match-ready pitches. Likewise, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has expressed its readiness to host World Cup games in Thiruvananthapuram if required.

At present, Bangladesh’s group-stage fixtures are scheduled to take place in Kolkata, beginning with a match against West Indies on February 7, followed by clashes with Italy on February 9 and England on February 14. Kolkata was initially selected due to its infrastructure, large-capacity stadium, and experience in hosting major international tournaments.

The situation has reignited debate over player safety and welfare during global sporting events. While the BCB has stressed that its request is based purely on security concerns rather than political considerations, the ICC must balance those concerns against the practical realities of tournament organization.

Officials familiar with the discussions suggest that shifting matches to alternative Indian cities could serve as a compromise, ensuring both enhanced security and minimal disruption to the tournament’s structure. India’s extensive experience in hosting large-scale international sporting events is seen as a key factor in the ICC’s confidence that appropriate measures can be implemented.

For Bangladesh, the uncertainty comes at a critical time as the team prepares for a demanding group-stage campaign against strong opposition. Off-field distractions could add pressure to a squad already facing intense competition on the field.

Sri Lanka, while a proven international cricket host, is not part of the official hosting framework for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Including an additional host nation at this late stage would require extensive coordination with broadcasters, sponsors, and local authorities, making the option increasingly unlikely.

As the tournament countdown continues, the ICC is expected to announce its final decision soon. While a full relocation to Sri Lanka appears improbable, a domestic venue change within India remains a realistic outcome.
